Guangdong Enterprises' Entry into Guizhou: A View from This Data Center

In recent years, Guangdong enterprises have significantly accelerated their investment pace in Guizhou Province, with the big data industry consistently serving as a crucial force driving bilateral cooperation. As one of the first Guangdong companies to enter Guizhou, TENCENT's Seven Star Data Center built in Gui'an New Area has not only deployed 300,000 servers but also successfully attracted over 70 upstream and downstream enterprises to establish operations there, gradually becoming a "digital hub" connecting eastern and western regional collaboration.

TENCENT's Seven Star Data Center is located in a valley within Gui'an New Area, leveraging the mountainous terrain to achieve high concealment, high protection, and high security. The center began construction in 2017, started trial operations in 2018, and was fully completed in 2020, becoming key infrastructure for TENCENT to store core data and provide highly reliable cloud services. Pony Ma, Chairman and CEO of TENCENT, once stated that building data centers in regions like Guizhou that are conducive to big data development fills him with confidence.

The entire data center covers approximately 776 acres with a total investment of 820 million yuan. The underground construction area spans 30,000 square meters, with a design capacity of 50,000 servers. The project fully utilizes natural mountain structures to provide explosion-proof, heat-insulating, and thermal-insulating functions. Through designs such as cold-hot aisle separation and modular independent layouts, it achieves energy-saving, consumption-reducing, and environmentally friendly operations.

TENCENT's project implementation represents a typical example of Guangdong enterprises' deep participation in Guizhou's big data industry development. In 2023, Dowson Yao, Vice President of Tencent Cloud, expressed that TENCENT remains optimistic about Guizhou's digital economy prospects, having recruited over 500 local employees, established multiple entities, and promoted the landing of various business segments. TENCENT began its Guizhou layout years ago, gradually investing in and constructing the Seven Star Data Center and Tencent Cloud Digital Economy Industrial Base, driving over 70 ecosystem enterprises to settle in.

TENCENT's continued investment has created a demonstration effect for more Guangdong enterprises entering Guizhou. According to statistics, over the past five years, investment amounts guided by Guangdong and implemented in Guizhou have exceeded 121.8 billion yuan, jointly building 30 industrial parks and 69 agricultural parks, cultivating 11 industrial clusters with annual output value exceeding 64.2 billion yuan. Currently, Guangdong enterprises' investments in Guizhou have expanded from big data to multiple fields including new energy battery materials, consumption assistance, and labor cooperation.

As Guangdong enterprises accelerate their entry into Guizhou, the scope of bilateral cooperation continues to broaden. Particularly in the new energy battery and materials industry, Guangdong's technological and R&D advantages form effective complementarity with Guizhou's policy and resource conditions. Shenzhen Shentun Group invested 6.1 billion yuan in Fuquan to build new energy materials projects, and a batch of key enterprises including Guangdong Kaijin New Energy have successively established operations in Guizhou.

From TENCENT's Seven Star Data Center to various industrial parks jointly built through Guangdong-Guizhou cooperation, collaboration between the two regions continues to deepen. The Seven Star Data Center has long transcended its singular storage function, becoming an important symbol of Guangdong-Guizhou collaboration and a key witness to Guizhou's big data development. As Guangdong enterprises continue to cultivate deeply in Guizhou, the foundation for cooperation between the two provinces becomes increasingly solid. This digitalization-led collaboration is opening up broader development space.
