Voice-Activated Home Design: AI Generates Floor Plans at Beijing Trade Fair

Homeowners looking to renovate their living spaces can now simply speak their requirements, and an AI system will generate a complete layout plan along with a detailed cost estimate. At this year's China International Fair for Trade in Services, Beijing Construction Engineering Group unveiled a series of cutting-edge technological achievements in the construction sector, focusing on resolving the persistent issue of data fragmentation across the design, production, and construction stages, while showcasing innovative applications of AI large models and construction robots in residential building scenarios.

"For a long time, the construction industry has struggled with disconnected data across various phases, where information from design and construction stages fails to transfer efficiently, hindering overall building productivity," explained Yang Zhenqing, Deputy Director of the Science and Technology Quality Department at Beijing Construction Engineering Group. To address these challenges, the group has developed a specialized industry-specific large model, supplemented by a comprehensive industry knowledge base and standards library.

The intelligent decoration solution on display is a practical application of this large model. When a user voices a request to modify their floor plan, the model generates a layout proposal within seconds. It can also convert two-dimensional blueprints into three-dimensional spatial models, complete with virtual walkthrough capabilities, offering an intuitive preview of the renovation results. Furthermore, the system can instantly produce a list of decoration materials and reference pricing, tackling the common headache of opaque costs in the renovation process. Once a plan is confirmed, the associated data flows directly downstream to connect with factory production scheduling, achieving a closed-loop intelligent process from customer demand to design output. The technology is expected to be market-ready within the next five years.

At the exhibition booth, a robotic arm equipped with vision capabilities was continuously at work, achieving millimeter-level operational precision. Serving as a technical verification platform, it is used to test and debug algorithms for various construction robots. "We are not developing hardware from scratch. Instead, we use our proprietary algorithms to bridge the data interface between our systems and mature equipment available on the market, enabling us to schedule and control these devices," said Yang Zhenqing. The technology is currently being tested in scenarios involving 3D-printed concrete formwork. By using the robotic arm to print finished molds directly, the traditional formwork installation process is eliminated, effectively enhancing construction efficiency.
