China EV Insurance Registrations for Week Ending May 25: Nio 3,840, Tesla 11,000, Xiaomi 6,800

Major electric vehicle (EV) makers continued to see a mixed performance in insurance registrations in China last week.

For the week of May 19-25 -- week 21, 2025 -- Nio (NYSE: NIO) branded vehicles saw 3,840 insurance registrations in China, down 9.43 percent from the previous week's 4,240, according to figures shared by several automotive industry watchers on Weibo today.

Nio's sub-brand Onvo saw 1,560 insurance registrations last week, down 1.27 percent from 1,580 the week before.

Nio's other sub-brand, Firefly, had 1,130 insurance registrations last week, the first time it has exceeded 1,000 units and a 36.14 percent increase from the previous week's 830 units.

Firefly launched its first model on April 19 and deliveries began on April 29.

Nio Inc, which includes the Nio, Onvo, and Firefly brands, had 6,530 insurance registrations in China last week, down 1.80 percent from the previous week.

Nio Inc delivered 23,900 vehicles in April, its second highest ever, behind 31,138 in December last year, according to figures it announced on May 1.

The Nio brand delivered 19,269 vehicles in April, up 23.36 percent year-on-year and up 88.56 percent from March.

Onvo delivered 4,400 vehicles in April, down 8.71 percent from 4,820 in March.

Firefly delivered 231 vehicles in April. Its effective delivery dates in April were April 29 and April 30.

Nio launched the updated ES6 SUV (sport utility vehicle) and EC6 coupe SUV on May 16 and deliveries started on May 20.

On May 25, the company launched the updated ET5 sedan and ET5T wagon, with deliveries beginning immediately after launch.

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) had 11,000 insurance registrations in China last week, down 1.17 percent from 11,130 the previous week.

The US EV maker has a plant in Shanghai that makes the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover, both for deliveries to local customers and as an export hub for it.

Tesla sold 28,731 vehicles in China's domestic market in April, down 8.56 percent from 31,421 in the same month a year ago and down 61.24 percent from 74,127 in March, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

Its Shanghai plant exported 29,728 vehicles in April, down 3.31 percent from 30,746 a year earlier and up 532.38 percent from 4,701 in March.

Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) had 5,700 insurance registrations last week, down 1.89 percent from 5,810 the week before.

The company delivered 35,045 vehicles in April, the second highest on record behind December 2024's 36,695 units.

This was the sixth consecutive month that Xpeng's monthly deliveries have been above the 30,000 mark, up 273.10 percent year-on-year and up 5.54 percent from March.

Xpeng will officially launch the Max variant of the Mona M03 on May 28, after giving the electric sedan its debut on May 20.

Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) had 10,500 insurance registrations last week, up 13.64 percent from 9,240 the week before.

It delivered 33,939 vehicles in April, up 31.61 percent from 25,787 a year ago but down 7.46 percent from 36,674 in March.

Last week, a local media outlet reported that Li Auto had lowered its 2025 sales target from 700,000 to 640,000 units, mainly due to the fact that order units for the updated Li L6 were not as strong as expected after its launch.

BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY)-branded vehicles had 53,300 insurance registrations last week, down 3.27 percent from 55,100 the week before.

The company sold 380,089 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in April, up 21.34 percent year-on-year and up 0.71 percent from March.

BYD on Friday announced wide-ranging discounts for models in its Dynasty and Ocean series, heightening the risk of a price war in China's auto industry.

Xiaomi (HKG: 1810, OTCMKTS: XIACY) had 6,800 insurance registrations last week, down 5.03 percent from the previous week's 7,160 units.

Xiaomi's EV unit, Xiaomi EV, delivered over 28,000 units in April, it announced on May 1.

Xiaomi gave the YU7 SUV, its second EV model, its debut on May 22, saying the official launch will be in July.

The Zeekr (NYSE: ZK) brand registered 3,600 insurance registrations last week, down 1.10 percent from 3,640 the week before.

The Zeekr brand delivered 13,727 vehicles in April, a decrease of 14.68 percent year-on-year and down 10.99 percent from March.

Including deliveries by Lynk & Co, the Zeekr Group delivered 41,316 vehicles in April, up 1.48 percent from 40,715 in March.

Leapmotor (HKG: 9863) had 7,200 insurance registrations last week, down 4.00 percent from 7,500 the week before.

It delivered 41,039 units in April, its second highest ever behind December 2024's 42,517 units.

That monthly delivery was up 173.50 percent from 15,005 a year ago and up 10.63 percent from 37,095 in March.

Aito -- a brand jointly created by Huawei and Seres Group -- had 8,800 insurance registrations last week, up 17.49 percent from 7,490 in the previous week.
