CATL Moves to Capture Smaller-Scale Energy Storage Orders

Having already established a commanding lead in the large-scale energy storage sector, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) is now accelerating its push to serve the business of small and medium-sized integrators.

On August 21st, the "CATL Mall" WeChat mini-program was officially launched. The platform is designed to sell original equipment directly to energy storage integrators, currently offering two LFP battery cells—the 280Ah (1P) and 314Ah models—with a minimum order quantity of just three units.

According to information gathered by our sources, the platform has already registered over 1,800 companies, and actual purchases have been made. These small-batch orders are covered by a 5-year warranty and official after-sales support. The company plans to expand the mall's product range to include battery packs and energy storage containers in the future.

Looking at the company's half-year report, CATL is certainly not short of large orders or production tasks. In the first half of 2026, the company's battery system capacity utilization rate reached 94.86%, with energy storage battery system revenue hitting RMB 53.261 billion, a year-on-year increase of 87.54%. During the same period, CATL also signed a three-year cooperation agreement with Hyperstrong to supply a total of 60GWh of sodium-ion battery storage.

The mall is designed to handle procurement that falls outside these large-scale project contracts. For tasks such as prototype trial production, temporary replenishment, and small commercial and industrial energy storage projects, the number of cells required per order is relatively small, but the procurement timeline is often tightly tied to project delivery deadlines.

According to information provided by CATL, companies can complete the entire process of product selection, inquiry, ordering, and payment in as little as 20 minutes, with delivery scheduled 3 to 5 days after payment.

A representative from KuaiBu New Energy stated that previously, procurement "often took as long as a month," but now "we can simply place an order directly, making replenishment and small-batch purchasing much more convenient."

Demand of this kind is on the rise. Data from InfoLink shows that in the first half of 2026, global shipments of small-scale storage cells reached 65.48GWh, a year-on-year increase of 202.57%, significantly outpacing the growth of the large-scale storage market. While CATL ranks first in large-scale storage cell shipments, the top three positions in the small-scale storage market are held by EVE Energy, Great Power, and REPT, with their combined market share exceeding 60%.

As residential storage, distributed storage, and small-scale commercial and industrial projects increase, the number of customers grows, procurement batches become more fragmented, and delivery times become less predictable. Long-term orders and direct supply to major clients cannot cover all these scattered demands, meaning battery manufacturers must now engage with a greater number of small and medium-sized integrators.

This shift is also altering the competitive landscape. These customers may place small orders, but they are highly sensitive to replenishment speed, batch consistency, and after-sales responsibility. The customer base and channels that EVE Energy, Great Power, and REPT have accumulated in the small-scale storage market form a critical foundation for their leading position. By launching its mall, CATL is effectively bringing a significant portion of these previously channel-based, fragmented purchases into its own direct sales system.

For small and medium-sized integrators, the appeal of direct sales from the original manufacturer lies in greater certainty. The specific batch a cell comes from, and who is responsible if issues arise, directly impacts project acceptance and subsequent maintenance. CATL states that products on the mall are fully traceable, and small-batch purchases enjoy the same 5-year warranty along with 1-on-1 official after-sales support.

Currently, the mall is selling cells, but the display section already features the 587Ah cell, 280Ah and 314Ah battery packs, as well as the EnerD and EnerD+ energy storage containers. The official sales date for these items has not yet been determined. Once these products are available for purchase, the mall's offerings will expand from individual cells to complete battery packs and container systems.

CATL signed a 60GWh long-term energy storage agreement in the first half of the year, yet it is now also willing to start business with orders as small as three cells. Companies like Scud and KuaiBu have already made purchases through the mall. When it comes to the scattered orders generated by prototypes, replenishments, and small projects, CATL has clearly decided to handle them directly.
