The central energy facility for the fourth-phase expansion of Shanghai Pudong International Airport, a key municipal project, has successfully completed the concrete structure topping-out for all its main buildings. Following this milestone, the project is now transitioning fully into the decoration and equipment installation phase, with a target to be ready for equipment commissioning by May next year.
The fourth-phase expansion of Pudong Airport is a critical project for Shanghai's development as an international shipping center. It encompasses eight project clusters, including the T3 terminal area, airfield area, and municipal supporting facilities. As a vital component of these municipal works, the energy center will perform the core function of supplying both cooling and heating to the future T3 terminal building.
Covering a total floor area of 22,000 square meters, the complex includes a high-voltage diesel generator room, a 35KV substation, the main energy center building, and three thermal storage tanks, each with a capacity of 24,000 cubic meters. This particular construction milestone marked the structural completion of both the generator room and the main energy center building itself.
Construction on the energy center began in September of last year. Despite challenges such as the relocation of a waterway and navigating the typhoon season, the project team managed to coordinate safety, quality, and schedule. By optimizing construction organization and scientifically allocating labor, materials, and machinery, they secured every critical phase. Through these combined efforts, all foundation work was completed by March, and the installation of the thermal storage tank walls began in June, culminating in the recent topping-out of all main structures.
Once operational, the facility will leverage off-peak nighttime electricity to store cooling and thermal energy, releasing it during peak daytime hours. This operation, akin to an energy-saving "power bank," will provide a low-carbon energy supply to the airport, helping to balance the regional power grid load, enhance the airport's energy peak-shaving capabilities, and effectively reduce its carbon emissions.
