Recent reports indicate that Lightyear Beyond, a team under Meituan, announced the public testing phase of its new product, the Tabbit AI browser. Following the product launch, a user posted on social media alleging that Tabbit AI browser had copied their code, providing screenshots of the relevant code as evidence.
In response to these claims, the official Tabbit AI browser account posted a statement on the Xiaohongshu platform, stating: "We have taken note of the community discussions regarding Tabbit browser's use of the 'Read-Frog' source project code and open-source compliance. Our team attaches great importance to this matter and has immediately conducted an in-depth internal review of the project's open-source and compliance status."
The official statement explained that on December 30, 2025, during development of translation functionality, the team became aware of the read-frog open-source project. At that time, the project repository contained no open-source license declaration. After evaluation, the team forked the project and proceeded with development as an independent project.
On January 2, 2026, the original author added a GPLv3 license to the project through a specific commit. Since the team had not continued merging subsequent code from the original project, they failed to promptly notice this license change.
Although the forking occurred before the project had a clear open-source license, the official statement emphasized full respect for the original author's ownership and license selection. The translation project will be removed from the new version of Tabbit browser, and the complete project has been made open-source for community review and use, demonstrating practical support for the open-source community.
