BYD Racco's Stunning Real-World Range Draws Attention as Japanese Media Finds "Reverse Understatement"

Since its launch in Japan on July 28, 2026, the BYD Racco has continued to attract attention from both the market and the media. The reason is not only that BYD became the first non-Japanese automaker in Japan's K-car segment, but also that the Racco's product strength has greatly exceeded the expectations of Japanese users and media alike.

The Racco, with a rated range of 320km, was even able to exceed its rated range in tests conducted by major media outlets including Nikkei. The testing journalist was surprised, saying: "This is the only electric vehicle in my test-driving experience that has not shown a noticeable range shortfall." Before the BYD Racco, no pure electric K-car on the Japanese market had ever achieved a real-world range exceeding 300 kilometers. For example, the Nissan Sakura, Japan's most well-known pure electric K-car, has a range of 180 kilometers. A Nikkei journalist drove 145km at 95% battery level, after which the Racco's instrument panel still showed 180km of remaining driving range.

In addition to Japan's official media, Japanese self-media outlets have also conducted test drives of the Racco, and in some tests even achieved 400km of driving on a full charge, making it a true case of "reverse understatement." In a region like Japan, where the vehicle electrification rate is low and local users generally do not yet fully trust electric vehicles, the key for electric vehicles to earn local users' trust lies in solid and reliable range, practical features, and a good long-term ownership experience. A Japanese self-media blogger challenged themselves to achieve 400km of range with the BYD Racco.

BYD is one of the earliest new energy brands to enter the Japanese market, and one of the few Chinese brands daring enough to enter Japan. Today, BYD's cumulative deliveries in the Japanese market have exceeded 10,000 units, with full-year registrations in Japan reaching 3,742 units in 2025, up 68% year-on-year, achieving growth for three consecutive years. After entering 2026, the growth rate further accelerated, with registrations in the first half of the year reaching 2,334 units, up 42.7% year-on-year; among them, orders in August alone reached 1,260 units in a single month, setting a new historical high. In the future, BYD will continue to bring more products that meet local needs to Japanese consumers, while also, in its global overseas expansion layout, closely tracking local demand, continuously enhancing product recognition in overseas markets, and providing local users with more of the products they need. BYD delivered its 10,000th new energy vehicle to a user in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.
