8月14日，据报道援引三位知情人士，特斯拉计划最早于本月发布新款Roadster设计，活动地点拟设在SpaceX位于得克萨斯州麦格雷戈的测试基地。此次发布的最大看点，是一款由特斯拉与SpaceX联合研发、搭载冷气推进器的限量版车型，并可能进行飞行展示。
由于冷气推进器运行时会产生极强的噪音和振动，现场观众将被要求与车辆保持数百码距离。与此同时，这款车型不会由驾驶员直接操控，而是采用无人驾驶、远程控制的方式完成展示。
