Industry data released on Tuesday shows that in September, U.S. electric vehicle maker Tesla Motors (TSLA) became the highest-selling imported passenger car brand in South Korea for the eighth month in a row.

According to the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association (KAIDA), the total number of newly registered imported passenger cars in South Korea last month was 34,904 units, up 6.3% year over year.

Tesla led the market with 12,372 units sold and has held the top spot since February.

BMW ranked second with 6,066 units, followed by Mercedes-Benz with 5,477 units and China's BYD with 2,614 units.

Last month, the Tesla Model Y L was the best-selling imported model in South Korea, with 8,690 units sold; it was followed by the Model Y Premium with 2,567 units and the Mercedes-Benz E200 with 2,133 units.

Driven by strong demand for electric vehicles from brands such as Tesla and BYD, EVs accounted for 52.1% of all imported passenger car registrations in September.
