The Federal Housing Finance Agency Director has urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook regarding two mortgage loans, marking the latest move by the Trump administration to intensify legal scrutiny of Democrats and officials appointed by them.
FHFA Director Bill Pulte, a staunch ally of President Trump, sent a letter to Bondi and Justice Department official Ed Martin on August 15th, suggesting that Cook may have committed criminal offenses. The letter reportedly accused Cook of "falsifying bank documents and property records to obtain more favorable loan terms, which may constitute mortgage fraud under criminal law."
Trump cited Pulte's statements on Wednesday, saying Cook "must resign now." Pulte posted on social media, claiming these allegations provide Trump with "grounds to fire Cook."
The Trump administration has accused several prominent Democrats of mortgage fraud, including California Senator Adam Schiff and New York Attorney General Letitia James. Both are long-time political opponents of Trump.
Cook facing such allegations represents an expansion of the crackdown to include the Federal Reserve. Trump allies, including Pulte, have been pressuring the Fed to cut interest rates and demanding that Fed Chairman Jerome Powell resign before his term expires in May.
No charges have been filed yet, and it remains unclear whether Bondi will launch an investigation. The Justice Department declined to comment. The Federal Reserve declined to comment. Cook did not respond to requests for comment Tuesday evening.
