A recent post on social media showing a large screen at an event for the Law School (Professional Degree Education Center) Alumni Association of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law in Wuhan, Hubei, displayed a donation total of "470,9999万," sparking widespread discussion. Many viewers were amazed by the figure, interpreting it as over 47 billion yuan, leading to comments praising the alumni's generosity and wealth. However, some questioned whether the number might have been misread due to formatting.
Upon verification by the university's Law School Alumni Affairs Office, it was clarified that the actual donation amount is 4.709999 million yuan, not over 47 billion yuan. The misunderstanding arose from an error in the PowerPoint presentation at the event: a comma was mistakenly used instead of a decimal point, causing the figure "470.9999万元" to be misread as "470,9999万," which many interpreted as a thousand separator.
The university's Law School official website confirmed this in a news release dated May 18, stating that the total alumni fund donation was 4.709999 million yuan, consistent with the office's explanation. The alumni association's establishment ceremony was held on the afternoon of May 16 at the Nanhu Auditorium, featuring a donation ceremony where multiple alumni contributed to support the school's development.
