JD.com Brings Robot Chefs Home: Seven Fresh Chef Targets Family Kitchens

JD.com (NASDAQ: JD) is moving its cooking robots from restaurant kitchens into households, launching a new business called "Seven Fresh Chef" aimed at the family health meal sector on September 16. The service began its first presale phase in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, with a founder member price of 19,888 yuan for early family users.

While a nearly 20,000-yuan cooking robot entering the home certainly draws attention, for Seven Fresh Chef, the machine is just one component of a broader service package. After users upload medical examination reports and fill in dietary preferences plus family member details, the system generates staged meal plans and daily menus. JD.com then delivers pre-washed and pre-cut fresh meal kits according to the schedule, with the robot handling cooking through preset programs.

The package includes the home cooking robot valued at nearly 20,000 yuan at market rates, along with 15,000 "Chef Coins" for RTC (Ready-to-Cook) fresh meal consumption rights, and a one-year AI dietary analysis and nutritionist guidance service. From Seven Fresh Kitchen introducing automated wok cooking in delivery kitchens, to Seven Fresh Coffee experimenting with robotic food preparation, and now Seven Fresh Chef entering family kitchens, JD.com is deploying robots across more real-world dining scenarios.

This move was not an obvious or straightforward choice. As early as 2018, JD.com opened its "X Future Restaurant," but the project never scaled up significantly afterward. Restaurant operations, menu design, and customer acquisition are not core strengths JD.com originally possessed. Gradually maturing robotics technology has introduced new variables to this business.

For the food service industry, automated equipment can reduce reliance on human expertise and improve cooking consistency; for robotics companies, dining offers continuous tasks, real orders, and operational data. This gives JD.com a continued rationale for investing in food service—it wants both to raise kitchen standardization through robots and to validate the commercial value of robotics through its dining ventures.

An Expensive Chef

Based on the nearly 20,000-yuan price tag, Seven Fresh Chef is clearly not targeting average households as a standard kitchen appliance, at least in its launch phase. A hands-on test of the Seven Fresh Chef mini-program reveals that, for the "Balanced Nutrition Plan," a 21-day program requires 4,251 Chef Coins. With the 15,000 coins included in the launch package, users can purchase approximately 3.5 cycles, covering around 74 days.

After the in-package coins are used up, users can top up to buy RTC fresh meal kits matched to their meal plans. A source close to Seven Fresh Chef told media that subsequent recharges would be calculated at 1 yuan per Chef Coin. Looking at dish prices in the mini-program, a serving of "Gongjin Scrambled Egg" costs 30 Chef Coins, stir-fried potato shreds 22 coins, and seaweed egg drop soup 25 coins, with most meat dishes priced between 35 and 60 coins. At the 1-to-1 yuan exchange rate, many dishes are priced comparably to freshly cooked meals at ordinary restaurants in first-tier cities.

Transferring cooking robots from food service outlets to family kitchens is not a novel concept. Media previously learned from a source close to Guoquan that the company had also studied sending the wok robots from its "Guoquan Xiao Chao" concept into regular homes along with fresh meal kits. The key difference: Guoquan's existing business leans toward community retail and budget-friendly ingredients, while Seven Fresh Chef places health management at the forefront of product design, thereby raising the added value of the entire service.

This also explains why JD.com's initial targets are mainly households with strong purchasing power and clear health management needs. In the mini-program, different dishes are tagged with labels like "iron-boosting" or "light calories," and the system recommends menus based on user-entered medical data, physical conditions, and dietary preferences. The fees users pay cover not just equipment and ingredients but also the service premium from health analysis, nutrition guidance, and personalized recommendations.

Beyond the 19,888-yuan professional edition, Seven Fresh Chef's "Heritage Edition" adds state banquet master courses, digitized family recipes, and exclusive chef home customization services, targeting the high-end family service channel. A version aimed at professional institutions exports Health Brain, fresh meal kits, and smart cooking equipment in modular form. This model is currently in its presale validation phase.

A source close to Seven Fresh Chef told media that the first presale batch covers Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and other cities, with deliveries rolling out in order of reservation. The business is still in presale, and specific delivery timelines remain undecided. Many rules also await clarity: what household size the package defaults to, how ingredient quantities and Chef Coin consumption adjust with additional family members, and whether household members with different health requirements can share one menu.

The bundled sale of fresh meal kits with cooking robots aims to lower operational barriers through standardized ingredients and spare users from relearning food prep and seasoning. But in the home environment, highly standardized equipment still faces highly unpredictable dietary needs. Chain restaurants require massive daily repeat output, limited SKUs, consistent flavor profiles, and face pressure from chef costs and fast store expansion. Robots can handle fixed recipes continuously, and calculating labor savings and payback periods is relatively straightforward.

Households, however, cook only a limited number of times per day. Family diets are highly variable—how many people are eating today, whether extra dishes are needed on the fly, if dining out happens, or what leftovers linger in the fridge can all derail planned menus. A more practical barrier comes from the kitchen itself. Commercial kitchens can be redesigned around equipment layouts and workflow, but home kitchens differ in size and renovation style. If robots need substantial adaptation to fit existing kitchens, consumers face not the purchase of a small appliance but the prospect of a minor kitchen remodel.

Until these questions get definitive answers, whether Seven Fresh Chef can evolve from a service for a few high-spending households into a broader family market remains uncertain.

JD.com Needs Dining, and Dining Needs Robots

JD.com's consistent investment in food service robotics started with two rounds of funding in Xianglu Robotics, which reportedly received tens of millions of yuan from JD.com in December 2023 and an additional nearly 200 million yuan in July 2024. In 2025, Xianglu's "Meishanshi" wok robot entered JD.com's self-operated dining project "Seven Fresh Kitchen," which operates on an "takeout + self-pickup" model. In 2026, Xianglu's "Xianka Ark" also entered Seven Fresh Coffee's unmanned stores, handling beverage production, with UniX AI's Panther wheeled dual-arm robot delivering drinks to pickup lockers.

Based on current moves, JD.com shows no clear intention of becoming a full robot manufacturer. Instead, it prefers roles as channel partner, scenario provider, and comprehensive service integrator, letting robots complete display, sales, testing, and delivery within its ecosystem. JD.com has announced a plan to invest ten billion yuan in robotics industry resources by 2028, aiming to help 100 brands each exceed one billion yuan in sales. Achieving this goal requires more than simply placing robots on e-commerce pages.

Unlike smartphones, robots cannot be purchased based on specs alone by consumers or enterprise clients. Their value must be proven in real environments: success rates for tasks, recovery times after failures, whether venues need modifications, and whether labor costs genuinely drop. Seven Fresh Kitchen and Seven Fresh Coffee are not just food service ventures—they function as test grounds, showrooms, and sales model spaces JD.com builds for robotics companies. JD.com's advantage lies in integrating robots, ingredient supply chains, and instant delivery capabilities into a complete dining solution.

For JD.com, dining is also a high-frequency consumption category occurring multiple times daily. Takeout, fresh groceries, and ready-to-cook meals can share procurement, warehousing, cold chain, and instant delivery networks, adding order volume to JD.com's existing supply chain and fulfillment system. Zheng Xiaodan, head of JD Retail's embodied intelligence business, stated during the 2026 World Robot Conference that JD.com aims to serve as a bridge connecting technology with products and as an "ecosystem partner" accelerating industry development.

Specifically, JD.com can display and sell robots through online platforms and offline stores, feed consumer and enterprise feedback back to manufacturers, while its logistics, retail, health, and dining operations provide real-world operating environments. After equipment sales, JD.com also seeks to handle leasing, installation, and maintenance, and leverage capabilities like JoyInside and JD Cloud to support robot model integration, human-machine interaction, and product iteration.

However, JD.com faces a structural weakness in playing this role: compared to established restaurant brands, it lacks a large, directly deployable store network for testing and replication. Seven Fresh Coffee set a three-year target of 10,000 stores when launched in November 2025, yet currently operates fewer than 50 outlets, while Seven Fresh Kitchen hovers around 100. Scaling is a question Seven Fresh must answer, though robotics and standardized production are also lowering the barriers to store replication.

Stir-frying and coffee-making involve repetitive, continuous processes that can accumulate operational and failure data for robots; in turn, robots can reduce dining's dependence on chef expertise, improve output stability, and boost store replication efficiency. The economics still lack critical data points. JD.com must still prove that robots can genuinely lower dining costs and that Seven Fresh Kitchen, Seven Fresh Coffee, and similar ventures can secure enough orders to cover store and equipment investments. Otherwise, the so-called test grounds, showrooms, and sales models will struggle to escape the status of ongoing experimental ventures.
