Cloud computing startup CoreWeave unveiled plans to invest up to $6 billion in constructing a cutting-edge artificial intelligence data center in Pennsylvania. The flagship facility will debut with 100 megawatts of capacity, expandable to 300 megawatts, positioning it among the region's first large-scale AI infrastructure projects.
CEO Michael Intrator confirmed the initiative will be formally announced during a Pittsburgh CEO roundtable attended by former President Donald Trump and Pennsylvania's Governor. "Demand for high-performance AI computing continues to surge," Intrator stated. "This expansion of our purpose-built AI cloud platform will accelerate innovation and stimulate regional economic growth."
The development phase is projected to generate approximately 600 construction jobs, with 70 permanent technical positions at launch scaling to 175 over time. CoreWeave intends to equip the facility with NVIDIA's next-generation chips expected in coming years, enabling training and operation of "the world's largest AI models" in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Founded in 2017 with backing from NVIDIA, CoreWeave counts industry titans including OpenAI and Microsoft among its clients. The company recently received the first NVIDIA GB300 NVL72 systems, signaling its rising prominence in the competitive AI cloud sector. Last week, CoreWeave disclosed a $9 billion acquisition of data center operator CoreScientific to further expand its infrastructure network.
"Three years ago, 10-megawatt facilities were standard. Today we're discussing gigawatt-scale deployments," Intrator observed, highlighting exponential market growth. Capitalizing on AI enthusiasm, CoreWeave has become a Wall Street bellwether with shares soaring approximately 260% since its March listing. Early trading saw the stock climb over 8%.
