Stride (LRN) shares plunged 38.29% in after-hours trading on Tuesday, despite reporting better-than-expected first-quarter results. The dramatic decline came as the education technology company issued weaker-than-anticipated guidance and revealed challenges with its new platform implementation.

For the first quarter, Stride reported adjusted earnings per share of $1.52, significantly surpassing the analyst estimate of $1.13. Revenue also beat expectations, coming in at $620.9 million compared to the estimated $613.8 million. However, these strong results were overshadowed by the company's outlook and operational issues.

Stride's guidance for the second quarter and full fiscal year fell short of market expectations. The company projects Q2 revenue in the range of $620 million to $640 million, below the consensus estimate of $650.8 million. For the full fiscal year 2026, Stride expects revenue between $2.48 billion and $2.555 billion, which is lower than the $2.67 billion analysts were anticipating. This muted outlook appears to be a primary driver of the stock's sharp decline.

Adding to investor concerns, Stride disclosed issues with its new platform implementation, which led to higher withdrawal rates and lower conversion rates. The company estimates these challenges resulted in approximately 10,000 to 15,000 fewer enrollments than expected. Furthermore, Stride announced a decision to limit in-year enrollment growth to focus on improving program quality and stabilizing the new platform, a move that could impact near-term growth prospects.

Despite the current challenges, Stride's management remains optimistic about the long-term demand for online education and the company's ability to overcome these short-term obstacles. However, the market's severe reaction suggests investors are prioritizing near-term headwinds over long-term potential, leading to the significant after-hours plunge in Stride's stock price.
