The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) disclosed on Tuesday that General Motors (GM.US) has initiated a large-scale recall due to fuel leak risks, affecting over 23,500 Chevrolet Corvette vehicles. The recall covers 2023 to 2025 Corvette models, as well as 2026 convertible and coupe variants. The root cause lies in fuel potentially overflowing into grooves around the fuel tank cap during refueling, which poses a fire risk if the leaked fuel reaches high-temperature components such as the engine or exhaust system. General Motors' investigation confirmed four fire incidents potentially related to this defect, with at least two accidents involving gas station pump malfunctions as contributing factors. As a remedy, dealers will install protective shields on recalled vehicles to redirect spilled fuel. NHTSA data indicates that approximately 0.1% of affected vehicles have the actual defect.
