The "15th Five-Year Plan" proposal adopted at the Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China calls for expanding high-level opening up and creating a new situation of win-win cooperation. Recently, at the freight yard of Zigong South Station, a gantry crane smoothly unloaded a 40-foot container carrying feed wheat flour from Central Asia. This return freight train from Central Asia, originating from Kapchagay, Kazakhstan, and entering China via the Alashankou port, traveled for 11 days across thousands of kilometers, marking its first direct arrival at the Southwest (Zigong) International Land Port. This event establishes a direct connection between Zigong and Central Asia. The "15th Five-Year Plan" proposal adopted at the Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee emphasizes enhancing the development level of the China-Europe (Asia) railway network. Zigong, located deep inland, is focusing on establishing stable, efficient, and low-cost international logistics channels to build itself into a regional logistics hub. Why was feed wheat flour chosen for the inaugural trip? "The livestock breeding industry in southern Sichuan has a huge and stable demand for feed raw materials, and Kazakhstan is a major grain exporter," explained Xu Cheng, Deputy Director of the operating organizer, Zigong Chuangfa Construction Co., Ltd. This train carried 62 containers, totaling approximately 1,643 tons of feed wheat flour, which will subsequently be transported to feed processing plants in the Sichuan-Chongqing region. Previously, this supply-demand relationship was constrained by lengthy logistics chains. Bao Xuming, Head of the Port and International Logistics Development Section of the Zigong Commerce Bureau, stated that the new corridor provides a direct rail trunk line solution from the production area to the consumption area. Compared to the traditional "sea transport + transshipment" model, this shipment took only 11 days, effectively reducing logistics costs. For feed enterprises, any reduction in raw material costs directly increases their market competitiveness. "The price per ton of feed wheat flour is about 50 yuan cheaper than before," provided Zhang Hui, the person in charge of the purchasing company, Zigong Dry Port Investment and Development Co., Ltd., giving a clear numerical example. A stable and efficient international trade corridor allows Zigong to deeply integrate into the global industrial and supply chains, winning new competitive advantages for local industries. The most direct manifestation is the enhanced attractiveness for industrial agglomeration. Zhang Hui indicated that the next step involves planning to invest in and build a feed processing plant in Zigong, and expand businesses such as importing wheat and barley from Central Asia, and importing cassava chips from Southeast Asia via the China-Laos Railway. "This genuinely brings raw material imports back, lands them in Zigong, serves the industry, and reduces costs for enterprises." Xu Cheng revealed that the company's goal is to promote the normalized two-way operation of the "Zigong-Central Asia" freight train route, with the next step being organizing the export of Sichuan goods. "Our chemical products, mechanical and electrical equipment, new materials, and even characteristic agricultural by-products have demand in Central Asian and European markets," stated Bao Xuming. He noted that in the past, exporting these products often required detours through Chongqing or eastern ports. If they can be assembled and shipped directly from Zigong, trade efficiency will be significantly improved. Currently, some local enterprises have begun inquiring about export-related details. Transforming this "inaugural trip" into a "regular service" still faces challenges. Xu Cheng admitted that cultivating and assembling sufficiently stable two-way cargo flows, especially developing competitive export sources, requires time and market development. "Internally, we need to accelerate the improvement of the collection, distribution, and transport system and the service ecosystem to attract cargo flow to gather in Zigong; externally, we must deepen operational coordination with ports along the railway line and actively integrate into the Chengdu-Chongqing hub network."
