India is pursuing self-reliant manufacturing of advanced semiconductors within a few years, a move that underscores the country's ambition to grow its technology manufacturing industry.
The Union Minister of Science and Technology stated that India's goal is to leap from 28-nanometer chip production to 2-nanometer chip manufacturing. "This will be a steady journey; we will not rush," the minister said.
The Indian government is expected to announce a new chip manufacturing initiative shortly, which will include additional dedicated funding. The initiative will focus on the chip design sector, with participation from at least 50 Indian deep-tech companies. Three domestic chip manufacturing plants are expected to commence commercial production this year.
Currently, India's semiconductor industry is still in its early stages. The world's most populous country has established a $10 billion special fund to support chip industry development, which has facilitated the establishment of multiple chip packaging, assembly, and testing companies.
Micron Technology has set up a factory in Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Tata Group, a major Indian conglomerate, is also among the ten domestic silicon wafer manufacturers in India.
