China Achieves Fully Automated Container Ship Operations for the First Time

The "Zhi Fei" vessel, equipped with a domestically developed intelligent navigation system, has become China's first commercially operated smart cargo ship, featuring three operational modes: manual piloting, remote control, and unmanned autonomous navigation. According to reports, on February 21, the "Zhi Fei" successfully docked at an automated terminal berth in Qingdao Port, Shandong Province, using its unmanned autonomous navigation mode. This milestone marks the country's first fully unmanned process for container ships, covering navigation, berthing, and cargo handling operations.

After precise positioning, the ship was secured using a vacuum-based automatic mooring system, which employed suction cups to firmly hold the hull without any manual intervention. The vessel was stabilized at the berth in under 30 seconds. Immediately following, the port's fully automated loading and unloading equipment began operating efficiently. A domestically developed terminal intelligent management system (A-TOS) and equipment intelligent control system (A-ECS) worked in coordination, enabling millisecond-level response times to direct automated quay cranes and automated guided vehicles for precise container handling.

The "Zhi Fei" is equipped with a core intelligent navigation system developed entirely within China. It represents the nation's first smart transport cargo ship designed for commercial use and supports three operational modes: manual control, remote operation, and fully autonomous unmanned navigation.
