Qatar's LNG Expansion Project Delayed Until 2027, Increasing Global Supply Uncertainty

A drone attack originating from Iran led to an unprecedented full shutdown at Qatar's Ras Laffan facility, disrupting the supply expansion of one of the world's largest liquefied natural gas producers.

According to a Bloomberg report, QatarEnergy has postponed the start of production for its North Field East expansion project until at least 2027.

The shutdown was triggered by a drone strike last week targeting industrial infrastructure at Ras Laffan, which forced Qatar to suspend a portion of its production. Citing informed sources, Bloomberg indicated that if the shutdown lasts no longer than one month, the North Field East project could still achieve its first exports early next year. However, as military tensions escalate in the Persian Gulf, a prolonged shutdown would result in further delays.

The project, designed with an annual production capacity of 32 million tons, is a crucial component of the global wave of new LNG supply expected this decade. Delays in its commissioning imply that the previously anticipated LNG oversupply will also be pushed back, requiring a reassessment of global supply and demand balances.

**Shutdown Impact: Unprecedented Operational Disruption**

Ras Laffan serves as the core hub for Qatar's LNG production. Last week's drone attack forced the facility to close—an event without precedent in the country's LNG operating history. At present, the exact duration of the shutdown remains unclear.

This is not the first time the North Field East expansion has faced schedule adjustments. Bloomberg noted that QatarEnergy had already delayed the project's start-up to the end of this year back in February, though specific reasons were not disclosed at the time. It is common for large-scale energy projects to experience delays as they near completion, often to address final engineering and technical challenges.

In an interview with the Financial Times last week, Qatar's Energy Minister Saad Al-Kaabi acknowledged the possibility of further delays but did not provide a specific revised timeline.
