Unusual Snowfall Disrupts Gold Mine Ramp-Up Schedule

On September 29th, after a new mine entered its ramp-up phase, weather impacts on production scheduling became especially direct.

According to RadexMarkets, Rio2 disclosed that its Fenix gold mine was affected by multiple rounds of heavy snowfall and strong winds during the third quarter, with mining activities temporarily suspended at times.

Key leaching, processing, and power generation facilities remained intact and continued operating at reduced capacity, preserving the basic conditions for resuming operations.

The company still aims to reach commercial production in the fourth quarter, while refraining from providing formal production guidance for the remainder of the year.

RadexMarkets believes these two pieces of information should be read together: the former expresses the direction of the ramp-up, while the latter indicates that quantitative forecasts still carry uncertainty, and the commercialization timeline target cannot be directly equated with fixed quarterly output.

For heap leach projects, there is a time lag between mining resumption and gold recovery.

Ore transport, stacking, and leaching require continuous sequencing, and even if weather improves, previous losses may not be fully recovered in the short term.

The absence of significant damage to facilities helps contain the scope of repairs, but reduced operating days may still alter unit costs, inventory pacing, and the timing of cash flow generation.

Moreover, a phased recovery does not mean full-year losses have been offset, and the pace of catching up on production remains constrained by staffing arrangements, transportation conditions, and processing capacity, and cannot be directly extrapolated linearly.

The focus in the coming weeks will be on operational continuity.

RadexMarkets analysis suggests observing whether personnel entry, ore stacking, and processing recovery can proceed steadily, while also watching whether the company reissues quantitative guidance.

If unusual snowfall persists, the recovery path may still experience setbacks; only as production records gradually accumulate will the degree of year-end delivery become clearer.
