The European Commission President announced in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, that the EU will provide €200 million in cooperative funding. This capital is slated for deployment in 2026 and 2027, with a primary focus on connectivity, clean energy, and critical raw materials. This move comes as the EU strengthens its economic partnership with the Danish autonomous territory, amidst ongoing efforts by the U.S. President to seek control over the island.

The funding arrangement is part of the "Global Gateway" cooperation initiative, according to information released by the European Commission. It aims to broaden support for connectivity, sustainable energy, and critical raw materials, building upon existing collaboration in sectors like education and fisheries. At a joint press conference with the Premier of Greenland's Self-Government and the Danish Prime Minister, the Commission President stated that the plan reflects Greenland's choice to strengthen its ties with the EU. The support package reportedly also includes enhancements to internet connectivity, hydropower facilities, fisheries, education, and initiatives to combat climate change.

Greenland's Premier expressed gratitude for the EU's continued backing during a period of external pressure, calling the bloc a vital and trustworthy partner. When questioned about the potential U.S. response to this funding, the Danish Prime Minister indicated that Denmark wishes to maintain close security and defense cooperation with the U.S. while simultaneously bolstering ties with European allies. The U.S. President has repeatedly cited national security concerns in his pursuit of control over Greenland, a stance that has drawn opposition from both Greenlandic and Danish authorities. This latest EU investment decision further underscores its support for Denmark and Greenland on matters of territorial sovereignty.
