Industrial energy production maintained steady growth last month, with power generation accelerating notably according to the National Bureau of Statistics. Industrial enterprises above designated size generated 796.3 billion kWh of electricity in June, marking a 1.7% year-on-year increase that represented a 1.2 percentage point acceleration from May's pace. Daily average generation reached 26.54 billion kWh during the month.

The cumulative output for the first half of 2025 stood at 4,537.1 billion kWh, rising 0.8% compared with the same period last year. Excluding the impact of calendar days, daily average generation increased by 1.3% year-on-year.

Broader energy production indicators showed: • Coal output reached 420 million tons (up 3.0% YoY, though 1.2 percentage points slower than May) • Crude oil production hit 18.20 million tons (up 1.4% YoY, 0.4 percentage points slower) • Natural gas output totaled 21.2 billion cubic meters (up 4.6% YoY, decelerating by 4.5 percentage points)

Power generation by source revealed divergent trends: • Thermal power grew 1.1% (0.1 percentage points slower than May) • Hydropower declined 4.0% (10.3 percentage points narrower contraction) • Nuclear power surged 10.3% (3.6 percentage points faster) • Wind power increased 3.2% (7.8 percentage points slower) • Solar power jumped 18.3% (11.0 percentage points faster)

The acceleration in June's power generation follows earlier weakness in May, with solar energy showing particularly robust expansion amid shifting energy mix dynamics. The data reflects ongoing adjustments in China's industrial power generation structure during the first half of 2025.
