Hong Kong Gold Exchange Trading System Limited (HKGXTS) has officially launched on August 18, marking a major step forward in the city's drive to establish itself as an international gold trading hub. The new entity is a joint venture between the Hong Kong Gold Exchange (HKGX) and Gold Link Technology Limited (TGX), with the goal of developing a comprehensive gold trading and clearing technology platform.

The new system will focus on enhancing Hong Kong's gold trading infrastructure and related fintech capabilities, with Hengsheng Electronics and Alibaba Cloud brought on board as key technology partners. The collaborative effort aims to create a secure, stable, and highly efficient platform with international reach for gold trading and settlement operations.

In terms of technical roles, TGX will oversee the overall system design and project governance, while Hengsheng Electronics will handle core system delivery. Alibaba Cloud will contribute cloud technology and future AI capabilities. Leveraging its extensive experience in fintech and trading systems, along with the infrastructure expertise of its wholly-owned subsidiary Hengsheng Digital Technology, Hengsheng Electronics will support the construction of HKGXTS's core systems. Meanwhile, Alibaba Cloud will provide cloud computing and digital infrastructure support to build a secure, stable, and scalable system foundation.

Where development stands

HKGXTS Chairman Ronald Cheung highlighted the significance of this initiative, noting that Hong Kong is actively advancing its international gold trading center ambitions by strengthening market infrastructure. "The establishment of HKGXTS is an important step in building Hong Kong's gold trading infrastructure," Cheung said. He expressed hopes that the new system will begin trial operations in the first quarter of 2027, with the initial phase consolidating all of HKGX's existing products, trading, settlement, clearing, and services into a single integrated platform.

Looking ahead, the platform will expand to incorporate additional electronic services, including gold tokenization-related offerings. The system is designed to embrace fintech, Web 3.0, and AI concepts, transforming traditional physical gold into a value-adding, versatile, and flexible asset class.

Strategic vision and expansion plans

HKGXTS CEO and Director Sun Hao outlined the company's strategic direction, emphasizing that the platform will build a multi-layered precious metals trading and investment hub based on physical gold delivery. The company plans to gradually expand extended-hour electronic trading capabilities to serve industrial clients and international institutions. By leveraging fintech innovations, HKGXTS aims to enhance trading efficiency while reducing transaction and settlement costs, with support for multi-currency pricing and settlement.

Under the Hong Kong SAR government's policy framework for establishing an international gold trading center, HKGXTS will actively support the development of the city's gold market infrastructure. The company is also preparing for potential integration with central clearing and regulatory systems, ensuring it remains well-positioned to support the long-term growth and sustainability of Hong Kong's gold industry.
