Rural Treasures Everywhere as Industry Vitality Enriches People's Lives

Rural revitalization is built on industry, with prosperity for the people as its foundation. In recent years, Sanxing Town in Chongming has relied on local resources, cultivated distinctive agricultural products, and developed a set of homegrown specialty industries that can be implemented, generate income, and be shared by all.

From ecological circular farming to smart agriculture, from revitalizing idle forestland to innovating breeding models, small-scale industries rooted in fields and close to villagers' daily lives are flourishing, firmly supporting the collective economy and genuinely filling villagers' pockets, giving rural development a solid foundation and villagers a promising future.

From Chongming white goat breeding and planting cycles to dual female pigeon specialty farming, from container-grown magnolia vegetables to understory mushroom cultivation, Sanxing Town is using "doorstep" industries as a driving force to convert resource advantages into economic advantages, planting industrial roots deep in rural soil.

Take a look at how these "doorstep" industries in Sanxing Town are steadily bolstering the village collective's finances and improving villagers' quality of life.

Although the Chongming white goat is a well-known local brand, the income threshold for scattered farmers remains high. Ping'an Village in Sanxing Town, through its "Ten-Mile Sheep Village" project, broke away from traditional thinking and developed a "planting-breeding-returning to field" circular model. Agricultural waste is collected uniformly as sheep feed to reduce costs, while sheep manure fertilizes the land to improve crop yield and quality.

The ranch launched products suited to different consumption scenarios through direct-sale e-commerce platforms, and after opening up sales channels, it drove scattered farmers to increase income. In 2025, a total of 368 white goats were sold, generating operating revenue of nearly 600,000 yuan, revitalizing idle resources in Ping'an Village and allowing villagers to participate in the industry at their doorstep and share in the returns.

A single white goat links the circular breeding chain with shared prosperity among farming households, paving a new path for rural revitalization that achieves both ecological and economic wins.

In traditional meat pigeon farming, female pigeons divide their energy between laying and incubating eggs, with each breeding pair producing only 2 eggs per month, making it difficult to improve efficiency. Yude Village in Sanxing Town partnered with Zhongge Industrial Co., Ltd. to innovate a dual female pigeon breeding model, pairing two female pigeons per cage to form a stable "companion relationship" dedicated to producing edible pigeon eggs.

By eliminating the incubation step, egg-laying capacity is maximized, while automatic feeding equipment is upgraded and feed formulas are optimized to reduce egg breakage rates. Under the new model, monthly egg production per breeding pair has increased nearly threefold, with pigeon egg sales exceeding 50,000 yuan so far this year and an expected annual increase of over 40,000 yuan for the village collective once at full capacity.

A cage of "sister pigeons" breaks through the efficiency bottleneck of traditional farming, activating the self-sustaining capacity of rural specialty industries and finding a new path of low investment and high returns for village collective income growth.

Who says growing vegetables must depend on the mercy of the weather? Hai'an Village in Sanxing Town used two repurposed shipping containers as smart cultivation pods to offer a different answer. Inside the pods, magnolia vegetables are grown using soilless hydroponics with fully intelligent temperature and humidity control, requiring no pesticides or chemical fertilizers, yielding approximately 3,000 to 4,000 jin per batch.

To date, cumulative sales have reached 658,000 yuan, bringing 304,000 yuan in profit to the village collective. Meanwhile, to address the idle period for magnolia vegetables during summer heat, Hai'an Village and Shenzhen Village collaborated in a "village-to-village" linkage, requiring only simple modifications to light strips and growing racks to introduce sanghuang mushroom cultivation, achieving staggered production and year-round crop rotation. A single container, productive across all four seasons, has become a "green bank."

Forestland and marginal plots once left idle in the village have now become a "treasure trove." The mushroom cultivation project in Haibin Village of Sanxing Town has been successfully implemented, with multi-span greenhouse structures and understory small arch sheds built to create a "understory plus greenhouse" dual-model system for cultivating high-quality mushrooms such as Stropharia rugosoannulata and morel mushrooms, engaging nearby farmers in planting and maintenance.

Haibin Village effectively revitalized 2.8 mu of idle land, generating 239,000 yuan in village collective economic income and 79,000 yuan in profit. Products are sold to surrounding markets and are well received by consumers. Row after row of mushrooms allow the "sleeping" land to breathe again, give the village collective a steady foundation for income growth, and broaden villagers' paths to prosperity.
