Nvidia's Upcoming Earnings: Unpacking Rubin Cycle, Recurring Financing, and Long-Term Market Positioning

Nvidia is set to release its quarterly results for the period ending July next week. Following the pattern of recent quarters, the market has grown accustomed to expectations of "earnings beats and guidance raises." What will truly determine the stock's upside momentum are three longer-term questions: whether Rubin can successfully succeed Blackwell, whether AI demand remains significantly above supply, and the extent of financing and balance sheet commitments Nvidia must undertake to secure future demand.

From brokerage estimates, the fundamentals remain robust. According to trading desk reports, Jefferies released a preview this week projecting Nvidia's July quarter revenue at $95 billion, exceeding the consensus estimate of approximately $91.9 billion. The October quarter revenue guidance is expected to reach $108 billion, also surpassing market expectations of around $103.7 billion.

Morgan Stanley's report takes a more conservative stance, estimating July quarter revenue of approximately $91.2 billion and October quarter of about $102.3 billion. However, it also believes recent trends will persist, with quarterly revenue potentially continuing to increase by roughly $10 billion sequentially.

In other words, the core debate in the market centers on whether, after delivering strong results, the growth trajectory for 2027 and 2028 can continue to be revised upward.

Blackwell Remains Strong, but Rubin Defines the Next Valuation Narrative

In the near term, demand for Blackwell remains robust. Microsoft and Amazon's cloud divisions have shown more pronounced improvement during the quarter, while long-term computing commitments from OpenAI, SpaceX, and others continue to bolster confidence in Nvidia's data center revenue.

Morgan Stanley notes that even without substantial contributions from Rubin, Nvidia's current growth is already quite strong. A more significant acceleration could emerge after the January quarter next year.

Rubin is one of the most critical keywords for this earnings call. Jefferies believes Rubin's ramp-up could be notably faster than Blackwell's initial phase. This is because Rubin maintains the 72-GPU Oberon NVL72 rack form factor, allowing it to leverage the liquid-cooled data center deployment and manufacturing infrastructure accumulated through GB200 and GB300.

Additionally, the new design significantly reduces manual cabling and pipe installation. Management previously mentioned that compute tray assembly time could shrink from approximately two hours to just five minutes. The implication is that Nvidia is transforming AI chips into a replicable, scalable "AI factory system."

Jefferies projects that VR/R200 will account for approximately 12% of Nvidia's GPU revenue in the third quarter of fiscal 2027, rising to over 40% by the fourth quarter, and becoming the dominant revenue source by the first quarter of fiscal 2028. If this trajectory materializes, the market's valuation logic for Nvidia will shift from "how long can the Blackwell cycle last" to "can Rubin unlock the next phase of growth from a higher base."

Vera CPU: Not the Main Course, but Completes "Full-Stack Control"

Beyond GPUs, the Vera CPU is another incremental development worth monitoring in the earnings report. Jefferies expects Nvidia's fiscal 2027 CPU revenue to reach $20 billion, including Grace and Vera. Their calculations show approximately $8.65 billion in CPU revenue accompanying GPU sales, with standalone Vera CPU revenue of about $11.35 billion, and an exit annualized revenue run-rate approaching $32 billion in the fourth quarter.

In absolute terms, CPUs still cannot rival Nvidia's AI GPU business and are more of a "bonus." However, the strategic significance is considerable: Vera CPU, with its low-power LPDDR5X and NVLink coherent connectivity within the Rubin domain, strengthens Nvidia's control over AI server and AI factory architectures.

This also creates new pressure on AMD and Intel. Especially as large customers increasingly prefer whole-rack and full-system procurement, Nvidia is selling a complete computing platform spanning GPU, CPU, networking, and software.

The OpenAI Mega-Deal: Securing Demand While Raising "Recurring Financing" Questions

What draws even more market attention is Nvidia's long-term compute arrangement with OpenAI. According to Jefferies' analysis, Nvidia has reached an agreement with SB Energy, where SB Energy will build, own, and operate the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus in Ohio, leasing it to OpenAI under a 20-year agreement, with Nvidia serving as the exclusive compute provider.

Nvidia will provide credit support for the initial 4.25GW of IT capacity and holds an option for the remaining 3.75GW, totaling up to 8GW, while investing $1.5 billion in SB Energy. Nvidia has stated that each generation of system deployment at the site could correspond to approximately 1.5 million GPUs, generating $150 billion to $200 billion in revenue. OpenAI's existing and planned commitments total approximately 12GW, expandable to 16GW, corresponding to roughly $600 billion in Nvidia compute purchases by 2030.

This undoubtedly provides a clearer anchor for Nvidia's long-term order book. However, the market will also question: how much of this demand stems from customers' organic capital expenditure, and how much requires Nvidia to facilitate through credit support, investments, or revenue sharing?

Morgan Stanley believes financing, market share, and gross margin are the three most contentious issues investors currently focus on. Nvidia's management will likely emphasize that these structures help accelerate AI infrastructure buildout, but investors need to see clearer accounting disclosures, including details on contingent obligations, lease and power payment support, and residual value commitments.

This determines whether the market views it as "locking in future revenue" or worries about it becoming a "balance sheet for growth" trade-off.

Gross Margin and Cost Pressures: Stable in the Near Term, Yet to Be Validated Long-Term

Nvidia's high gross margin has long been a foundation of its valuation premium. Morgan Stanley expects the company to maintain its "mid-70s" gross margin guidance for fiscal 2027. But pressures do exist. Costs for HBM, DRAM, advanced packaging, substrates, and front-end wafer manufacturing continue to rise, and new product ramp phases typically involve yield, testing, and supply chain integration challenges.

Morgan Stanley cautions that the consensus expectation of a significant gross margin recovery in the second half of fiscal 2028 may be somewhat optimistic. This means if Nvidia provides more cautious language on mid-to-long-term gross margins during the call, it could trigger short-term volatility. Conversely, if management can articulate cost locking, pricing power, and system-level sales structure, it could instead serve as an "expectation clearing" event.

The Biggest Bottleneck May Not Be Chips, but Electricity

As AI capital expenditure progresses further, electricity is increasingly likely to become the most tangible constraint. Jefferies points out that the gap between chip demand expectations and grid supply capacity is widening.

Large cloud providers are increasingly partnering with utility companies to build dedicated gas-fired power plants and transmission infrastructure, while frontier AI labs and emerging cloud providers are increasingly adopting "behind-the-meter" power solutions to bridge the timing gap between grid interconnection schedules and compute deployment.

This does not mean AI infrastructure expansion will halt, but it will make the conversion of orders into revenue less linear. Gas turbines, backup power, and fuel cell solutions are all being advanced, but equipment delivery lead times, grid interconnection approvals, local regulations, and community acceptance will all affect data center construction timelines. Nuclear power and small modular reactors are more likely to be variables beyond 2030.

Therefore, Nvidia's core challenge over the coming years is whether customers' data centers, power supply, and financing can keep pace simultaneously.

Clarity Is the Stock Catalyst

Morgan Stanley maintains an "Overweight" rating and top pick status on Nvidia, with a price target of $288, noting that Nvidia's current valuation of approximately 17 times FY28 earnings is not expensive relative to its own history, semiconductor peers, or the broader market.

However, a low valuation alone does not necessarily lead to immediate upside. Over the past four quarters, even when Nvidia delivered strong results, the stock experienced negative reactions the following day, indicating the market has already priced in "beating expectations" as the default scenario. What can truly drive valuation recovery going forward is whether management can clearly address four key questions:

Beyond October quarter guidance, will the January quarter see significant acceleration from Rubin; whether Rubin's ramp is smooth enough to maintain product leadership; the extent of financing obligations behind long-term agreements like OpenAI; and whether power, regulatory, and cost pressures will impact delivery momentum beyond 2027.

Overall, this earnings report will likely still be a strong one. But the market has entered the next phase: no longer satisfied with seeing demand, but rather how demand will be realized through supply, power, financing, and margin expansion simultaneously.

Nvidia's story remains grand, and near-term fundamentals are supported. It's just that as AI infrastructure investment reaches trillion-dollar levels, investors must assess whether an entire AI industrialization system can sustain its operation.
