Western Media: Times Are Changing

China's recent hosting of two major diplomatic events has indeed stirred reactions in the West. On September 4th, both mainstream Western media outlets published articles suggesting that the era of Western-dominated international order is indeed facing significant changes.

An analytical article published suggests that during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit held in Tianjin at the end of August and the commemoration ceremony of the 80th anniversary of China's victory in the anti-Japanese war and the world's victory over fascism held on September 3rd, the political leaders attending these events, while not sharing identical views on all issues, certainly shared this consensus: the Western-centered international order is being transformed.

John Love, Director of Foreign Policy at the New Eurasian Strategy Center think tank, stated in an interview that "the existing dominance of the Western alliance in international affairs is weakening."

The article also argues that in the current context of rapidly changing geopolitical landscapes, Europe should reassess its security strategy. Meanwhile, the United States, Europe's traditional security guarantor, is increasingly moving away from the center of the international stage under President Trump's leadership. Although not explicitly stated, there seems to be an implication that Europe should adopt more pragmatic strategies to meet these new changes.

An article published the same day approaches the issue from a trade policy perspective. It argues that the current US administration's behavior of creating enemies everywhere and its trade policies that disregard allies' interests have disrupted the Western-led international political and economic order, with India's growing closeness to China and Russia being a typical result.

The article also states that a new international order different from the US-established, Western-centered one is emerging and its influence is continuously expanding.

Finally, the article suggests that even if President Trump insists that his "America-centered" trade system can bring America back to its former "golden age," it will be difficult to maintain in the future, both domestically and internationally.

Although neither media outlet has escaped the mindset of "great power competition" and there are misunderstandings about China's position on promoting a more just and reasonable global governance system, they have undoubtedly recognized this reality: the Global South is no longer the "silent majority" but has become a key force in international order transformation.
