上周末，美国队在米兰经过加时赛以2比1的戏剧性比分战胜加拿大队后，特朗普在更衣室与全队进行了庆祝通话，并当场发出访问华盛顿的邀请。周二，身着统一深蓝色美国奥运队服并佩戴金牌的球员们在椭圆形办公室与特朗普握手致意。
据悉，特朗普于周日亲自致电球队表示祝贺，并邀请他们出席国情咨文演讲。他在电话中开玩笑称，如果不同时邀请同样斩获奥运金牌的美国女子冰球队，他可能会遭到弹劾。此次通话由联邦调查局局长卡什·帕特尔协调安排，帕特尔也参与了男子队的更衣室庆祝活动。
女子冰球队对此邀请表示感激，但因已有既定行程安排而婉拒出席。
