General Motors to Enter Large-Scale Energy Storage Battery Market, Aims to Counter Slow US EV Sales with Tech Innovation

American automaker General Motors (GM) announced on the 9th its plan to launch production of large-scale energy storage battery components. This move aims to compete with car manufacturers like Tesla and Ford in the expanding energy storage market and to alleviate market pressures stemming from the current slowdown in electric vehicle sales within the United States.

General Motors intends to develop industrial-grade energy storage batteries using relatively new sodium-ion technology. It is reported that GM will collaborate with Peak Energy, a company headquartered in California and Colorado, which will be responsible for integrating GM-produced battery cells into industrial-scale energy storage systems. Kurt Kelty, GM's Vice President of Battery, pointed out that cost is the core of competition in the energy storage market. Sodium-ion batteries offer significant cost advantages, but the technology still requires further refinement and is expected to achieve mass production by 2028.

GM CEO Mary Barra previously reiterated in media interviews that electric vehicles represent the future direction, but the pace of transition will be determined by consumers. Since the U.S. Congress eliminated the federal tax credit of up to $7,500 for electric vehicles last year, domestic EV sales in the U.S. have slumped. Consequently, major automakers like GM, Ford, Stellantis, and Honda are facing substantial losses on their investments in the EV sector. Industry analysis suggests that shifting production to energy storage batteries can help car manufacturers improve the return on investment for their existing battery factories.

Diverging from the current paths of Ford and Tesla, GM will focus on developing battery cells using sodium as the primary active ingredient. Compared to lithium, which is used in most energy storage and EV batteries, sodium derived from soda ash is not only cheaper but also easier to process. Furthermore, sodium-ion batteries can operate safely and efficiently without the need for complex cooling and heating systems. Although sodium-ion batteries are currently too bulky and heavy for use in most vehicles, Kelty predicts this situation could change within the next four to five years as the technology advances.

While expanding into the energy storage business, GM also announced on the same day that it will upgrade various features of its electric vehicles through software updates.

On one front, GM will introduce a Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) function. After the update, owners of vehicles such as the Chevrolet Silverado pickup, Equinox and Blazer SUVs, and several Cadillac models will be able to allow utility companies to draw power from their vehicles' remaining battery capacity when connected to a home charger. This helps balance grid supply and demand, with owners receiving compensation in return. Wade Scheffer, GM's Vice President of Energy, stated that this technology will ultimately provide financial benefits to customers over time. He urged utility companies to make full use of the growing energy storage resource represented by electric vehicles. Currently, GM has sold approximately 250,000 vehicles equipped with this capability.

On another front, GM is updating its EV software to simplify the public charging process. In the future, GM users will be able to charge at most public charging stations, including Tesla Superchargers, without the need for cumbersome operations via a mobile app. They can simply plug in the charging cable to automatically initiate charging and safely leave the vehicle. Kelty emphasized that driving range, cost, and charging convenience remain the core challenges for EV development. GM's initiative aims to comprehensively reduce the total cost of ownership and enhance the usability of electric vehicles.
