Ford Motor Company's stock has reached a nearly three-year high, a rally largely disconnected from its core automotive business of passenger cars and trucks. The surge, totaling 28% over two weeks, followed the announcement of a new subsidiary, Ford Energy, dedicated to the energy storage sector.
The new venture involves an initial investment of $20 billion and focuses on repurposing electric vehicle batteries into stationary energy storage systems. These systems will be supplied to artificial intelligence data centers, electric utilities, and large industrial clients, positioning Ford to compete with leading battery firms like Tesla and LG Energy Solution.
This strategic move into energy storage comes as the electric vehicle industry faces a downturn, with actual battery demand falling short of earlier projections. For bullish investors, it represents a new growth avenue, leveraging the booming U.S. AI industry and rising energy needs. Citi auto analyst Michael Ward noted, "The market is increasingly focused on Ford's ability to utilize its energy-related technology and capacity."
On Tuesday, Ford's stock closed at $15.32, its highest level since 2023. This performance contrasts sharply with its Detroit rivals: General Motors' stock is down about 2% year-to-date, while Stellantis, owner of Jeep and Ram, has fallen 28%.
Investors are particularly optimistic about Ford Energy's partnership with CATL, the world's largest battery manufacturer. Earlier this month, Morgan Stanley analysts estimated the energy business could be worth $100 billion, helping to ignite the stock's rise. James Picariello, head of U.S. auto research at BNP Paribas, stated, "This is essentially an efficient reuse of excess battery capacity."
With the auto industry facing headwinds in 2026, Ford's expansion into new revenue streams is seen as a strategic response. High prices continue to strain consumer budgets, dampening new car sales, while geopolitical tensions pushing oil prices higher add pressure on Detroit automakers reliant on large gas-powered trucks like Ford's F-Series.
Ford itself faces challenges. Picariello explained that to offset a projected 2025 shortfall in pickup truck sales, the company must ramp up F-Series production to record levels, a task complicated by rising aluminum costs. "For the rest of the year, the company must produce at a record pace to meet its targets," he said.
While Ford Energy's first products are scheduled for delivery in the second half of next year, the venture offers a bright spot for an industry scaling back heavy EV investments due to regulatory shifts and cooling consumer demand. The optimism is also tied to Ford's licensing of CATL's low-cost battery technology for production in Michigan and Kentucky.
Jefferies analysts highlighted in a Tuesday report that this partnership could become a core competitive advantage for Ford, providing direct market opportunities as CATL faces constraints in the U.S. market. Ford Energy plans to deploy at least 20 gigawatt-hours of energy storage systems annually and has already secured a major agreement with EDF to supply 4 GWh per year starting in 2028.
However, Picariello cautioned that Ford needs to secure several more contracts of similar scale quickly to demonstrate the business can meet expected demand. "Theoretically, Ford would need about five more deals of this size in the next 12 months to confidently achieve its 20 GWh annual installation target," he said.
Such a significant stock boost from a non-automotive venture is rare among traditional automakers, with Tesla being a recent exception as it pivots toward autonomous driving and robotics. "Beyond Tesla, it's hard to find another legacy automaker where this has happened," Picariello concluded.
