British air travelers faced a second consecutive day of severe travel disruptions on Wednesday, as fallout from a critical technical failure at a key airspace node forced cancellations of hundreds of flights at Heathrow and other major hubs.
The incident marks another in a series of similar failures in recent years that have repeatedly tested the resilience of the UK's aviation infrastructure. On Tuesday, British Airways scrapped nearly 200 flights, with the flag carrier attributing the disruption to aircraft and crew being out of position. Data compiled by Cirium showed that over 1,750 flights were cancelled across UK airports on Tuesday alone.
The knock-on effects persisting into Wednesday underscore the complexity of restoring operations after a severe system failure. With roughly 8,000 flights transiting UK airspace daily, widespread cancellations leave planes and crews stranded away from their scheduled locations, while airlines must also deploy extra flights to repatriate the large numbers of stranded passengers.
Heathrow Airport, the UK's busiest, said that while operations were recovering, passengers should still anticipate residual disruptions as aircraft and crew are repositioned. The airport has deployed additional staff across its terminals to assist in the gradual return to normal service. Gatwick Airport, London's other major hub, echoed this sentiment, stating that a full recovery to normal operations would still take some time.
The Tuesday fault was traced to a technical issue at NATS Holdings, the public-private entity headquartered in Swanwick, Hampshire, responsible for UK air traffic control. The UK government has ruled out a cyberattack as the cause. NATS noted in its statement that the recovery process was highly complex, creating difficulties across the entire aviation network, and that a return to full normality would require more time.
