Stock Track | MasTec Plunges 12.16% After-Hours as Narrow Q2 EPS Miss Triggers Profit-Taking

MasTec (MTZ) shares plunged 12.16% in after-hours trading, wiping out the stock's roughly 12% intraday gain. The sell-off was triggered by the company's second-quarter earnings report, which showed adjusted earnings per share narrowly missing analyst expectations.

The company reported adjusted EPS of $2.22, just below the consensus estimate of $2.23 in a 0.45% miss. While revenue of $4.373 billion surpassed the $4.305 billion estimate and earnings grew 48.99% year-over-year, the marginal EPS shortfall was enough to spark aggressive profit-taking. The stock had rallied strongly during the regular session on a sector-wide rebound and optimistic earnings expectations, leaving bullish sentiment fully priced in and vulnerable to any disappointment.

MasTec also updated its full-year adjusted diluted EPS guidance to $9.30, above prior estimates, and recently closed a $1.65 billion acquisition to expand its data center capabilities. However, the after-hours move reflected a swift unwinding of the day's earlier gains as traders reacted to the slight earnings miss.
