Ongoing Tensions in the Middle East: Ship Traffic in the Strait of Hormuz Hits Weekly Low

Deep News
Aug 12

The number of tracked vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz fell to just eight on Tuesday, marking the lowest daily count in a week, according to shipping data. Persistent tensions in the Middle East are driving ships away from this critical waterway.

The prospect of ending the conflict with Iran appears increasingly remote, with both the United States and Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi group reporting attacks. Tehran has stated it will keep the strait closed unless Washington accepts its conditions.

Kpler data shows that the total number of vessels entering the strait on Tuesday was eight, below the 10-day average of about 12, and the lowest single-day tally since August 5. Only one coal carrier was departing the strait, while the remaining vessels were still in transit. All seven ships entering the strait chose the Iranian-side route.

London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) data indicates that 11 vessels passed through the strait on Tuesday, down from 14 the previous day. Under normal conditions before the Iranian closure, roughly 130 to 140 ships traversed the strait daily.

Kpler data also showed that 30 ships crossed the Bab el-Mandeb Strait at the southern end of the Red Sea on Tuesday, higher than the 10-day average of 25.
