On October 24, IT Home reported that according to Tech Planet, ByteDance plans to launch a new game distribution platform called GameTop in international markets, similar to Steam. This platform aims to provide a diverse range of game content, creative tools, and social spaces for players overseas. This move is seen as a significant strategy for ByteDance's gaming business in the overseas distribution sector.

IT Home learned that ByteDance is currently recruiting talent for GameTop. Officially, GameTop is focused on overseas game distribution and is dedicated to offering personalized game content that caters to game creation and social interactions. ByteDance mentioned that user operations for the platform require the development and execution of user engagement strategies to drive user acquisition, activation, retention, and recall. They will establish a user segmentation system and profiling model, using data to create differentiated operational strategies. Additionally, they will plan a user growth system (including levels, points, and badges) to enhance user activity and stickiness, and cross-functionally collaborate to guide users in interaction, socializing, and purchasing based on product functionalities and content.

Moreover, there is already an application named GameTop available in the Google Play Store, developed by Pylon Games, which offers more than 200 offline mini-games along with new social channels and supports short video creation. It remains unclear whether this is related to ByteDance’s upcoming platform.

According to Tech Planet, the background for ByteDance's overseas platform initiative is the significant strategic adjustments its gaming business has undergone over the past year. Since the strategic shift of the gaming division in April 2024 and the appointment of Zhang Yunfan (former President of Perfect World’s gaming business) in May 2024 to oversee the division comprehensively, the development strategy has changed from a previous aggressive approach to a more pragmatic one focused on “large distribution of smaller self-developed games”. Under Zhang’s leadership, the business has been restructured, integrating resources from Mutong Technology, Chaoxi Guangnian, and the UGC department, with a more concentrated investment in product development and fine-tuned operations, emphasizing the balance of efficiency and quality in project management.

On a business level, ByteDance's gaming division currently has several new games in the pipeline across various genres, including shooting, card games, and action types. Its studios, such as Jiangnan Studio and Zero36 Studio, are actively exploring the integration and innovative applications of AI technology in gaming. In the domestic market, the game “Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage”, which is distributed by Chaoxi Guangnian, has shown stable performance; and the UGC platform project codenamed “Atom” (similar to “Egg Party”), developed by Jiangnan Studio, is also under cautious testing. The mobile game “Victory Peak” developed by Mutong Technology has gained a good start since its domestic launch in January 2025, accelerating ByteDance’s position in the domestic esports landscape. In terms of acquisition strategy, ByteDance’s gaming division has shifted to a more focused approach, emphasizing business synergy and strategic supplementation. For instance, in 2024, it acquired Jinhua Lehong Network Technology Co., Ltd. and Yunyou Network (Beijing) Technology Development Co., Ltd., gaining their established casual gaming product lines; Mutong Technology also acquired part of the team and assets from Hangzhou Xinguang Liu Mei to enhance its R&D capabilities in the shooting game genre.
