Profit Growth at Huilong Masks Rising Receivables, Cash Drain, and Mounting Short-Term Debt

Anhui Huilong Agricultural Means Of Production Co.,Ltd. (002556.SZ) released its 2026 semi-annual report on August 13, revealing a dual-edged financial picture. The company posted revenue of RMB 8.547 billion, a 3.26% year-on-year increase, while net profit attributable to shareholders edged up 1.51% to RMB 113 million. On the surface, the 'first supply and marketing cooperative stock' appears to have delivered a steady performance through its dual agricultural inputs distribution and fine chemicals businesses, yet a closer reading uncovers several operational concerns.

Nearly half of the reported net profit was propped up by non-recurring items, signaling weak core earnings efficiency. Net cash flow from operating activities plummeted 283% year-on-year to negative RMB 417 million, diverging sharply from book profits. Accounts receivable ballooned from RMB 578 million at the start of the year to RMB 1.361 billion, while short-term borrowings doubled to RMB 1.647 billion, leaving cash reserves insufficient to cover immediate obligations and underscoring significant liquidity strain.

Non-recurring gains fuel nearly half of net profit, casting doubt on earnings quality

The semi-annual report shows that Anhui Huilong Agricultural Means Of Production Co.,Ltd. operates a hybrid model, distributing chemical fertilizers and pesticides domestically and internationally, alongside producing and selling its own branded compound fertilizers, pesticides, and fine chemical products. During the first half of 2026, revenue grew just 3.26% to RMB 8.547 billion, with net profit attributable to shareholders rising a marginal 1.51% to RMB 113 million—a seemingly stable but unspectacular performance.

However, a deeper dive reveals that deducted non-recurring profit stood at just RMB 60.216 million, meaning non-recurring items totaled RMB 52.37 million and accounted for roughly half of the bottom line. Within this, fair value changes and disposal gains from financial assets and liabilities contributed RMB 45.565 million, supplemented by RMB 9.654 million in government subsidies. In essence, over 40% of the company's first-half net profit stemmed from one-off gains rather than operational strength.

While the 73.4% surge in deducted non-recurring profit suggests improving core profitability, this growth builds on an exceptionally low base from the prior year. In the first half of 2025, deducted profit was merely RMB 34.72 million, the weakest first-half showing in a decade. Even at RMB 60.21 million, the deducted profit margin against RMB 8.547 billion in revenue is below 0.7%, highlighting persistently weak core earnings efficiency.

Core business profitability declines as segment performance diverges

The company has long anchored on agricultural inputs and fine chemicals as twin pillars, but first-half results showed divergent trends, with overall gross margin on main operations at just 6.03%. Agricultural inputs remain the dominant driver, generating RMB 6.994 billion in fertilizer and pesticide revenue, up 5.19% and representing 81.83% of total revenue. Yet, this segment's gross margin slipped 0.09 percentage points to 4.89%, squeezing profit margins further.

The fine chemicals unit, once touted as a second growth engine, saw its subsidiary Haihua Technology maintain a full industrial chain from m-cresol to thymol and L-menthol. Menthol products target Southeast Asian and South American markets, while BHT products are listed among global suppliers. This segment boasted a gross margin of 20.30%, up 2.40 percentage points, standing out as a rare bright spot. However, its revenue declined 6.22% year-on-year to RMB 559 million.

Additionally, revenue from agricultural by-products and other operations fell 3.69% to RMB 994 million. The lack of cohesive momentum across segments weakens the synergy of the diversified portfolio. Despite efforts to boost value through integrated industry-trade-services, proprietary branding, and agricultural social services, these initiatives have yet to translate into meaningful profit improvements.

Cash flow drops 283%, receivables surge, and inventory stays elevated

Cash flow often serves as a litmus test for financial health, and the first-half figures are concerning. Net cash flow from operating activities came in at negative RMB 417 million, a 283% year-on-year decline that contradicts the modest profit growth. The company attributed this to reduced cash receipts from sales of goods and services.

Behind this explanation lies an abnormal spike in accounts receivable, which climbed to RMB 1.361 billion by the end of June, up RMB 783 million or 135.6% from RMB 578 million at the start of the year. As a share of total assets, receivables jumped from 5.37% to 11.79%. Since revenue grew only 3.26% during the same period, the outsized receivables growth suggests the company has significantly loosened credit policies to sustain sales, weakening collection capabilities.

Inventory pressures also persist, with balances remaining high at RMB 3.346 billion, up approximately RMB 300 million from the start of the year and nearing 29% of total assets. Elevated stock ties up working capital and exposes the company to write-down risks. In the first half, the company booked RMB 24.018 million in inventory impairment losses, alongside RMB 26.530 million in fixed asset impairment, bringing total asset impairment losses to RMB 50.633 million, a 260.8% year-on-year increase.

Beyond operational cash flow and asset quality concerns, the debt structure warrants scrutiny. Short-term borrowings reached RMB 1.647 billion, up 22.56% year-on-year, while non-current liabilities due within one year soared 148.36% to RMB 1.121 billion. Combined, interest-bearing debt due within a year approaches RMB 2.768 billion, far exceeding the RMB 1.12 billion in cash and equivalents at period-end, even excluding restricted funds. Whether the company can tighten credit policies, accelerate collections, reduce inventory, and deleverage to convert scale into genuine core profits will require close monitoring in upcoming reports.
