Kimbal Musk, brother of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, has been implicated in the Jeffrey Epstein case, with reports indicating he dated a woman introduced by the financier for approximately six months.
The U.S. Department of Justice released a new batch of Epstein-related documents on January 30, in which Kimbal Musk's name appears 140 times. Kimbal has since resigned from the board of the Burning Man festival due to his association with the case.
According to recently disclosed emails from the DOJ, Epstein arranged for a woman within his network to maintain a close relationship with Kimbal Musk. Between 2012 and 2013, Kimbal Musk dated the woman for about six months, describing their interactions as a "dating" situation.
Prior to their first meeting, Epstein and his longtime associate Boris Nikolic worked to arrange an introduction, bringing her to a birthday party hosted by Kimbal. In an email to Epstein, Nikolic stated, "Please arrange (the woman)."
"Jeffrey and Boris, thank you so much for introducing me to the woman," Kimbal emailed Epstein and Nikolic after having lunch at Epstein's Manhattan apartment in October 2012. "I believe you were both involved. :)"
During their relationship, the woman repeatedly forwarded Kimbal's private messages to Epstein and sought his guidance on the relationship. There is no indication in the emails that Kimbal was aware of this secret communication.
Reports indicate that in recent years, the woman has stated through her lawyers that while within Epstein's circle, she was manipulated, coerced, and abused by him. She has never publicly discussed her experiences or her relationship with Kimbal Musk.
On Monday, after media outlets requested comment, Kimbal Musk posted a statement on X regarding his connections to Epstein and the woman. "This post relates to the Epstein files and explains why my name appears in them. In 2012, I began dating a 30-year-old woman. We were introduced through friends; Epstein did not introduce us. The only time I met that monster was during the day at his New York office. I never saw him again and never visited his island," Kimbal wrote.
"He received many emails from me because he subscribed to a newsletter I sent to thousands of people every few weeks. I have deep sympathy for Jeffrey Epstein's many victims, as I do for anyone who has suffered sexual abuse or harassment of any kind," he added.
To date, Kimbal Musk has not been accused of any wrongdoing in connection with Epstein.
The emails, part of three million Epstein-related documents released by the DOJ last month, reveal a friendlier and more complex relationship between Kimbal Musk and Epstein than previously known—extending beyond regular newsletter subscriptions. The correspondence coincides with a period when Epstein appeared to be cultivating ties with Kimbal and his brother Elon Musk, including invitations to his private island and leveraging personal connections.
A 2020 report indicated that Epstein arranged a meeting between Kimbal Musk and a woman with whom Epstein had previously been involved and who lived in an apartment owned by Epstein's brother. While the relationship between Kimbal and the woman appeared genuine, sources suggested Epstein viewed it as a means to establish a connection with the Musk family.
The emails cover a period after Kimbal's divorce from his first wife. In a 2013 email to Nikolic, he mentioned being "divorced now! Free to live."
From late 2012 to early 2013, Kimbal Musk exchanged numerous emails with Epstein and Nikolic, inviting Epstein to his birthday party and SpaceX launches. Kimbal even joked about the three of them coordinating Halloween costumes.
It remains unclear how Kimbal Musk and Epstein initially met, but in September 2012, Kimbal invited the disgraced financier to his 40th birthday party at the Four Seasons in Manhattan. Nikolic, who had discussed party plans with Kimbal, emailed Epstein the day before the birthday, stating, "Just spoke with Kimbal. His actual birthday is Thursday night (though the party is Saturday). Kimbal, Elon, and a few close friends will be going out that night. I told him you would join. I also said you would come with (the woman); he might want to ditch his ex/current. He agreed and is very much looking forward to it."
"Please prepare (the woman); she might like Elon too," Nikolic added.
The day after his birthday, Kimbal emailed Nikolic to say he had a great evening and invited Epstein and his friends to the formal party at the Four Seasons the next night, asking Nikolic to send the guest list to his assistant.
Nikolic promptly forwarded the email to Epstein, who inquired about arranging a lunch at his home for the Musk brothers. Later that day, Nikolic reminded Epstein to provide the party guest list, noting, "Kimbal really likes (the woman)."
A week later, an email from Kimbal to Epstein showed that Epstein missed the party, but Kimbal proposed a meeting the following week. Their assistants later confirmed a lunch appointment for October 7.
After the lunch, a series of emails were exchanged among Musk, Nikolic, and Epstein. Kimbal suggested meeting again around Halloween and joked about costume ideas. He also thanked Epstein and Nikolic for the introduction to the woman, after which Nikolic advised Kimbal to "be nice" to her as she was "one of Jeffrey's girls."
In subsequent weeks, Kimbal and the woman spent more time together. On October 22, he sent her an affectionate email, suggesting fate had brought them together and inviting her to join him in London for Talulah Riley's (then Elon Musk's wife) birthday party.
The woman forwarded the invitation to Epstein, calling those who introduced them "geniuses!" Epstein suggested she could spend Thanksgiving with Kimbal in a romantic location like Morocco or visit his island beforehand. He also shared a schedule with a colleague outlining nearly two weeks the pair would spend together from October to January.
While advising the woman, Epstein was also emailing Elon Musk. In November, he asked how many people Elon would bring on a helicopter to his island. Elon replied, "Probably just me and Talulah. Which night/day is the craziest party on the island?" The trip ultimately did not happen due to logistical issues. Elon Musk recently claimed his communications with Epstein, including emails and social invitations, were "misinterpreted" and called the document release a "distraction."
On January 24, 2013, Epstein invited Kimbal to his island. Kimbal responded that it "sounds great" but declined, citing personal turmoil. He thanked Epstein and asked him to "say hi to (the woman)."
Kimbal's relationship with the woman appeared to continue into 2013 until he emailed her about slowing things down and returning to a more casual dating dynamic. He apologized for being in a "bad mood" the previous night and expressed a desire to see her more but stated he was too overwhelmed for a serious relationship.
The woman forwarded the email to Epstein and another associate, Steve Hanson, seeking advice. Hanson replied critically, instructing her to end contact with Kimbal, leave immediately, and turn off her phone to regain control of the situation.
The next day, the woman sent Epstein a text she claimed was from Kimbal, apologizing and offering to arrange a car to pick her up from LAX. No response from Epstein was found in the DOJ files.
Although records show no further intimacy between Kimbal and the woman, he continued inviting Epstein to private events as late as 2014. Epstein also discussed island visit plans with Elon Musk in late 2013 but canceled, deciding to stay in New York.
Kimbal Musk's connection with the woman did not completely end. In 2015, he personally invited her to a charity event for his food education nonprofit, expressing a strong desire for her to attend. When she asked Epstein for advice, he simply replied, "Go."
Kimbal has described the post-divorce period as a sad and chaotic time, during which he dated multiple women and became an "unhealthy version" of himself. In a podcast last year, he admitted to drinking heavily and behaving irresponsibly, including "hooking up with girls" and partying excessively. He said he set rules for himself, such as dating three women simultaneously to avoid deep attachment, and learned to be honest about not being ready for a serious relationship.
