Reports indicate that OpenAI currently has over 200 employees developing a range of artificial intelligence-powered devices, including a smart speaker, as well as potential smart glasses and a smart desk lamp.

The smart speaker is expected to be the first hardware product released by OpenAI, with a projected price between $200 and $300. According to two informed sources, shipments of the speaker are not anticipated to begin until February 2027 at the earliest. The device will reportedly include a camera capable of gathering information about the user and their surroundings.

This functionality will allow the speaker to identify objects on nearby surfaces and recognize conversations taking place around it. The camera will also support facial recognition technology similar to Apple's Face ID, enabling users to authenticate purchases through facial verification.

Mass production of the smart glasses may not be feasible until 2028. As for the smart lamp, although a prototype has been developed, it remains uncertain whether it will be brought to market.

OpenAI recently entered the hardware sector with its $6.5 billion acquisition of io Products, a startup founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive. The move aims to capitalize on growing demand for tangible AI and augmented reality solutions. Ive is widely regarded as a central figure in Apple's design aesthetic, having contributed to nearly every major Apple product since joining the company in the 1990s until his departure in 2019.

Previously, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, achieved significant success with its Ray-Ban smart glasses. The product enables users to record videos, capture photos using miniature cameras, and livestream content. Reports suggest that both Apple and Google are also developing their own smart glasses offerings.
