The Rise of Solo Enterprises: Is Becoming Your Own Boss the Future for Workers?

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence technology has fueled an explosive growth of One Person Companies (OPCs) in 2026. An OPC refers to an entrepreneurial model where an individual, leveraging AI tools, independently manages the entire business chain—from product design and development to market launch—creating a complete commercial cycle with just one person.

The swift emergence of OPCs is injecting new vitality into individual entrepreneurship and economic development, while also reshaping the entrepreneurial landscape in the AI era. Following the 2026 Spring Festival, Zheng Haifeng established Yansenyao (Qingdao) Digital Cultural Creative Content Production Co., Ltd. in Qingdao's High-Tech Zone. Although Zheng is the sole human employee, she is assisted by several "AI employees" who handle specific tasks such as promotion, marketing, and financial management.

Zheng, who has long been involved in children's science and innovation training, developed a keen insight into industry trends through her experience with various tech products and innovative models. The surge in AI-generated comic series in late 2025 drew her attention to the diverse application potential of AI technology. Her company now primarily offers AI-driven promotional services to businesses, efficiently creating text, image, and video content to aid corporate social media campaigns. Additionally, it focuses on AI search optimization and operations, addressing challenges related to enterprise visibility on AI platforms.

A March 2026 research report from a task force under the State Administration for Market Regulation indicated that OPCs in China are growing rapidly, clustering in the Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, and emerging industrial cities in central and western China. These ventures are characterized as asset-light, high-intellect, and innovative, with entrepreneurs predominantly from the post-90s and post-00s generations.

The OPC model, centered on "one person plus AI," is becoming a new hotspot for the deep integration of the digital economy and innovation. Tools like large AI models, SaaS systems, and cloud services enable individuals to perform tasks—such as design, programming, marketing, and accounting—that previously required a team, lowering the entrepreneurial barrier from an "organizational level" to a "personal level." Furthermore, the new Company Law implemented on July 1, 2024, simplified registration procedures and reduced capital requirements, making it easier for individuals to start companies.

In niche sectors like professional consulting, creative design, and cross-border e-commerce, entrepreneurs can now meet market demands without large teams. The widespread adoption of e-commerce platforms, social media, and remote collaboration tools allows them to sell products, attract clients, and manage operations without physical stores or fixed teams, significantly reducing trial-and-error costs.

According to Liu Yiming, an associate professor at Shandong University's School of Economics, OPCs break traditional employment constraints by offering low-cost entrepreneurial pathways. They enable professionals, freelancers, and recent graduates to monetize their skills without substantial capital, transitioning from "employees" to "entrepreneurs." Compared to traditional firms, OPCs are ultra-lean, with minimal overhead and highly focused operations. Run solely by founders, they feature flat structures and streamlined decision-making, allowing quick pivots based on market needs without concerns for team or asset management.

For example, business units incubated by Jiangsu Dreame Technology for OPCs were established in just 12 days on average, far quicker than traditional company setups. Kang Jianfeng, 49, who has launched three ventures, most recently started Jinan Quanfeng Information Technology Co., Ltd. as an OPC in 2025. He noted, "As AI evolves, digital and virtual employees will become smarter, helping entrepreneurs swiftly capitalize on new trends."

OPCs avoid employee salaries and minimize rental costs, with monthly expenses ranging from hundreds to thousands of yuan thanks to AI and cloud services. Data show that 92% of high-profit OPCs deeply integrate AI tools to slash operational costs. Li Mahui, who runs an OPC designing and selling sports and fitness gear using AI, pays only 35,000 yuan annually for a workspace in Jinan's International Trade Park. He remarked, "Without AI, success would be elusive for a novice like me."

Typically, OPCs thrive in vertical niches, leveraging core expertise for differentiated advantages rather than scaling up. For instance, illustrators use AI to build personal brands focused on hand-drawn art and custom services, while cross-border live streamers operate solo, targeting specific product categories for precise profitability. Liu Yiming added that OPCs are altering industry competition and collaboration norms, shifting away from traditional supply chains and mass production toward refinement, agility, and customization.

As OPCs expand, many regions are racing to develop OPC communities with supportive policies. Guangdong Province recently launched an initiative to foster 10 AI OPC ecological communities by year-end, aiming for 100 by 2028, attracting thousands of innovators to establish the province as a national leader in AI OPC development. In February, Qingdao, Shandong, outlined plans to become a hub for marine AI and "single-person plus multi-agent" innovation during the 15th Five-Year Plan period. The city introduced 12 measures, including computing vouchers, talent subsidies, and startup loans, to offer a "ready-to-work" environment for OPC founders.

Zheng Haifeng benefited from these policies, registering her OPC in just 30 minutes after a one-day decision process. Jinan's International Trade Park provides one-stop services for licensing, finance, talent, supply chain coordination, global exhibitions, funding, and training. Since its launch in early February, the city's "Digital Intelligence OPC Community" has received continuous applications, with 51 firms in the first batch, serving as a model for cultivating AI-driven micro-innovations.

Liu Yiming concluded that regions are competing for OPCs to harness their innovative energy, talent resources, and economic potential. As "micro-cells" of urban innovation, OPCs' flexible models and cutting-edge tech applications offer fresh momentum for city development.
