近年来，加拿大向美国东北部地区的电力输送量呈现下降趋势，美国能源信息署在一份报告中指出，这一现象部分归因于干旱限制了加拿大的水力发电量，部分原因则是纽约和新英格兰独立系统运营商的电力需求减少。
数据显示，2016年至2022年期间，加拿大电力进口占纽约独立系统运营商(NY-ISO)电力供应的11%。然而，这一比例在2024年降至3%，今年截至8月份更是降至2%。
在电力需求高峰期，加拿大电力进口仍发挥着关键作用。今年1月，加拿大为新英格兰独立系统运营商(NE-ISO)提供了14%的电力供应，但截至8月份的平均比例为5%，相比2016年至2022年期间的14%大幅下降。
值得注意的是，尽管这两个地区通常是电力进口方，但"趋势的转变已导致多个交易日出现向加拿大净出口电力的情况"。
