Tianjin Advances AI-Powered Transportation with Seamless Airport and Rail Hub Clearance

Tianjin has officially unveiled its "Artificial Intelligence + Transportation" Action Plan, signaling a major push to embed intelligent technology across the entire transport network. The initiative sets ambitious targets for 2030, including the creation of over nine flagship application scenarios and the deployment of more than ten high-quality data sets and intelligent agents. The overarching goal is to establish a robust digital foundation, enable comprehensive scenario-based empowerment, and foster a dynamic industrial ecosystem within the transportation sector.

To support this digital transformation, the plan focuses on strengthening data resources and computational capabilities. Authorities will actively connect with public computing resources in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region while encouraging enterprises in ports, highways, and logistics to develop and share their own computing infrastructure. A unified municipal platform for computing resource scheduling is expected to facilitate two-way data flow between government and businesses, ultimately reducing costs associated with AI adoption.

The initiative outlines extensive applications for smart highways, including the deployment of intelligent sensing and unmanned inspection technologies. Over 900 kilometers of demonstration road sections will be equipped with systems for real-time monitoring of critical bridges, slopes, and tunnels. This will enhance situational awareness and enable intelligent management of road network operations under abnormal conditions.

In the port sector, Tianjin aims to scale up the use of intelligent equipment, building on its status as a smart and green hub. The plan targets full automation of large container handling machinery and the expansion of AI-powered transport robots. By leveraging multi-agent collaboration, these robots will perform operations across the entire port area. Furthermore, pilot programs for smart vessels will be conducted on near-sea routes such as Tianjin to the Yangtze River Estuary and Tianjin to Zhuhai. These trials will test autonomous obstacle avoidance, ship-shore coordination, assisted docking, and convoy navigation in complex environments.

Public convenience is a key priority, particularly for integrated travel. Tianjin will develop smart services that combine data from various transportation modes, aiming to introduce seamless face-recognition and QR-code clearance at airports and railway hubs. Enhanced coordination between metro and bus services is also planned, with efforts to guide enterprises in building Mobility as a Service (MaaS) systems. This will gradually enable unified trip planning and ticketing across intercity, regional, and urban transit, delivering a frictionless travel experience.

Finally, the plan addresses the emerging low-altitude economy. A dedicated management service platform will be established to oversee airspace usage, streamline approval processes, track flight paths, and provide conflict warnings. A commercial pilot program for drone operations, initiated through a simple "scan-to-fly" mechanism, will also be launched to test and refine these capabilities.
