Nanjing Jiangbei New Area: Forward-Looking Strategy for Emerging Industries Shapes New Competitive Edge

A new wave of future industries, represented by artificial intelligence, robotics, and innovative drugs, has become a defining feature of China's foreign trade in recent years. As the only national-level new area in Jiangsu Province, the Nanjing Jiangbei New Area is seizing the opportunities presented by these three emerging sectors. Through forward-looking strategic planning and systematic cultivation, it is strengthening its industrial resilience and original innovation capabilities, forging new advantages in its modern industrial system.

In the field of artificial intelligence, the Jiangbei New Area has gathered a number of leading companies. Recently, a company named Agnes AI has frequently appeared on international authoritative AI benchmark rankings. Its self-developed large model has repeatedly entered the global top ten, competing alongside industry giants like OpenAI, DeepSeek, Zhipu, and KIMI. This "dark horse" in the global AI circle has its domestic headquarters, Aisi Technology, located right in the Jiangbei New Area. In the last week of July, the token processing volume of Agnes' three major models reached 8.16 trillion, placing its service call scale in the first tier of global large model services. In the large model track, the globally leading AI application platform Maifushi also chose to establish its global R&D headquarters in the Jiangbei New Area at the beginning of 2026. This company has already served over 210,000 enterprises in their overseas expansion. Deep Intelligent Control, focusing on physical AI, has its business covering more than ten countries and regions in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe and America. In the integrated circuit sector, considered the "heart" of AI, Huatian Technology saw its overseas export value reach $250 million in the first half of the year, a year-on-year increase of 193.5%.

Meanwhile, robots from the Jiangbei New Area are accelerating their "deployment" globally. Jizhi Intelligent Manufacturing is a typical representative. In recent years, the company has experienced an explosive growth in overseas orders, with products now sold to 38 countries and regions worldwide. This year, Jizhi Intelligent Manufacturing also launched a "global tour"—at industrial exhibitions in Russia, Germany, and Brazil, the company's booths were consistently crowded. In October, the team will also travel to the United States for sales exhibitions. The climbing robots of Xinghe Huiteng are cleaning oil stains on wind turbine towers in Uzbekistan. The logistics robots of Muxing Robotics are working in overseas warehouses in South Korea, Japan, Australia, and Germany. The BabyAlpha robot dogs from Weilan Technology have sold 25,000 units, becoming "new members" of countless families. These robots, leaving the production lines of the Jiangbei New Area, are making their mark around the world.

Innovative drugs from the Jiangbei New Area are also accelerating their "going global" journey. This sector represents the highest technical barriers and the longest development cycle among the three emerging industries. The CAR-T drug developed by Sirun Biotechnology has attracted over 60 overseas patients from South Africa, Switzerland, New Zealand, and other countries to travel to China specifically for treatment, due to its excellent clinical results. The company has also established a "cross-border drug supply network" covering Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Oceania, and secured a marketing authorization in Singapore in June. It's not just about selling innovative drugs globally; it's also about winning "orders" from global giants through hardcore innovation. Local pharmaceutical companies like Simcere Pharmaceutical, Yingpai Pharmaceutical, and Vilizhibo have successively signed multiple overseas technology licensing and cooperation agreements. Notably, Simcere Pharmaceutical reached a partnership with the global pharmaceutical giant Boehringer Ingelheim to jointly develop Simcere's investigational bispecific antibody drug, SIM0709. The project could bring in cooperation payments of up to 8 billion yuan. Vilizhibo's single technology licensing deal with the American company Dianthus Therapeutics has a total transaction value of up to $1 billion, continuously highlighting the industry's international competitiveness.

The presence of all three emerging industries is underpinned by the forward-looking strategy of the Jiangbei New Area. As a national-level new area, it is also the location of the Nanjing Area of the China (Jiangsu) Pilot Free Trade Zone, naturally giving it an industrial foundation defined by "newness." Over the years, the Jiangbei New Area has focused on defining its own position, striving to build a "2+4+N" modern industrial system. The "three emerging industries" are precisely the three most prominent pieces of this system. Beyond industrial clustering, an "invisible hand" provides continuous support—a "1+2+1+N" fund matrix covering the entire lifecycle of enterprises, offering ample financial "living water" for every technological leap. Focusing on the AI track, the Jiangbei New Area released the "Jiangbei New Area Artificial Intelligence Industry Development Action Plan (2025–2027)." From building computing infrastructure to expanding application scenarios and establishing an AI industry alliance, it outlines a clear roadmap for the future industry, step by step. This strategic foresight led industry giants like Maifushi and Aisi Technology to choose to establish their presence in the Jiangbei New Area. The robotics track here is not built on thin air; it has a solid foundation laid by leading companies like Nanjing Automobile (SAIC), CRRC, and Sumec. During its development, over 300 upstream and downstream enterprises from the industry chain have gathered, and professional platforms like the Humanoid Robot Industry Research Institute of the Jiangsu Provincial Digital Economy Society and the Embodied Intelligence Robot Standardization Promotion Center have also been established, forming an industrial ecosystem integrating R&D, manufacturing, and application.

The cultivation of innovative drugs is more like a long-term endeavor. Over a decade of dedicated effort, the Jiangbei New Area has built a biomedical public service platform, established a review department of the Jiangsu Provincial Drug Administration within the area, and hosted the first national university technology transfer center. This has nurtured a "biomedical rain forest." Here, over 1,300 life science companies have taken root and grown. Companies like Simcere, Sirun, and Yingpai, which are excelling in selling drugs overseas, are the towering trees that have emerged from this forest. When a trend arrives, it is always the city that has planned ahead that seizes the opportunity. Therefore, as long-term accumulation reaches a critical point, the framework of urban development expands, and the "three emerging industries" are experiencing an "explosion period" in the Jiangbei New Area. Going forward, the Jiangbei New Area will continue to deepen its efforts in core technology breakthroughs, cross-sector integration, and the construction of an innovation ecosystem. It aims to transform the first-mover advantage from its forward-looking strategy into a sustained industrial competitiveness, pushing the "three emerging industries" from a state of "having everything" to a state of "excelling in everything."
