Comcast Corporation's NBCUniversal has entered into a partnership agreement with Amazon.com, introducing the ad-free version of its Peacock streaming service to Prime Video Channels. This marks the first time the streaming platform has been included in the online retailer's digital channel bundle.
The Prime Video Channels collaboration forms part of a broader distribution agreement. Under this deal, consumers will continue to have access to the Peacock app on Amazon's Fire TV streaming platform, can purchase or rent Universal Pictures movies through Prime Video, and will be able to watch Prime Video content on Comcast's Xfinity X1 devices.
Comcast President Mike Cavanagh described the agreement with Amazon as one that "expands the exposure of NBCUniversal content."
Amazon has positioned Prime Video as a comprehensive entertainment destination where users can stream original series such as "The Boys" and "The Summer I Turned Pretty," watch live sports including NFL Thursday Night Football, NBA games, and NASCAR events, while also accessing third-party streaming services like HBO Max, Apple TV+, and Paramount+.
NBCUniversal's Peacock Premium Plus service will enhance Prime Video's professional sports content lineup, providing users with streaming access to NBC's Sunday Night Football, Premier League matches, and live Olympic Games coverage.
For media partners like NBCUniversal, Prime Video Channels offers an extensive new platform to promote their $16.99 monthly Peacock Premium Plus service to millions of potential subscribers.
Currently, Peacock has 41 million total subscribers, significantly fewer than comparable streaming platforms. The division's losses have narrowed from $348 million in the same period last year to $101 million in the second quarter of this year.
According to a source familiar with NBCUniversal's strategy, if the partnership with Amazon Prime Video Channels proves successful, it could serve as a template for collaborations with other third-party streaming distributors.
