Hunter Biden (and His Laptop) Enter the Cryptosphere With New Meme Coin
The son of former President Joe Biden is launching a meme coin that takes aim at his family’s nemesis, Donald Trump. And he’s naming it for the most-infamous personal computer in American political history.
Biden’s token will trade under the ticker, $LAPTOP, and launch Sept. 9 on Base, a digital ledger built by Coinbase Global COIN -4.18%decrease; down pointing triangle, the largest U.S. crypto exchange, people familiar with the matter said.
On Monday, Biden posted on X a short video clip of his laptop being referenced by different media outlets, teasing the launch of his meme coin.
Meme coins carry no intrinsic value, and most tumble in price within days or even hours after their launch. But some of the tokens have remained relevant thanks to their affiliations with a procession of celebrities, personalities and politicians who issued them to cash in on their fame.
Solana to triple transaction size as apps get room for more complex trades
The Solana smart contract blockchain is targeting Wednesday to increase the maximum transaction size from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes, giving developers more than three times as much room to fit instructions into a single operation.
Operations that previously had to be split across several transactions can increasingly be handled in a single transaction under Transaction v1. That includes large cryptographic proofs, payments requiring many approvals and some confidential transfers.
Ethereum commits to letting users pay gas fees without having to hold ETH
A wallet can hold hundreds of dollars in stablecoins and still be unable to move them. That’s because the Ethereum blockchain charges a fee, in ether ETH, for every transaction, and a wallet without ether cannot pay it.
A proposal meant to fix that is now a committed part of the blockchain’s next major upgrade. Core developers moved EIP-8141, called Frame Transactions, to Scheduled for Inclusion at their Aug. 27 call, marking the feature as part of a broader network update rather than just a candidate for one.
DBS and Citi complete weekend USD payment via Swift’s Digital Ledger using tokenized deposits
DBS (D05) and Citi (C) completed the first cross-border USD payment over a weekend using tokenized deposits on Swift's Digital Ledger, the banks announced Monday. The transaction, executed on Sept. 5 between DBS in Singapore and Citi's New York office, settled in minutes rather than the industry norm of up to two business days.
It is the second confirmed live transaction on Swift's blockchain ledger, following HSBC and Standard Chartered's first live cross-border transfer in August. The back-to-back tests come as Swift's $1.5 quadrillion network faces pressure from stablecoins and tokenized deposits that settle around the clock, raising the question of whether the 53-year-old messaging network can adapt fast enough to remain relevant. Swift rolled out its blockchain ledger in July with 17 banks.
Bitcoin faces CPI and PPI tests this week
On the on-chain data front, CryptoQuant points out that the recent BTC rally has been primarily driven by the futures market, without synchronized confirmation from spot demand. Derivatives open interest increased by approximately $2.3 billion in a single day to $27.53 billion, while spot demand remains negative, suggesting that the sustainability of the current uptrend is still in question.
On the technical side, BTC achieved its first weekly close above $80,000 for consecutive months this week, but strong selling pressure remains near the $80,000 level. Meanwhile, BTC's weekly Supertrend indicator has turned to a "buy" signal for the first time since November 2025, with similar signals previously appearing after the bear market bottomed out in early 2023.
