GEELY's Li Shufu Advocates Strengthening Methanol Vehicle Industry to Reach New Heights

At the High-Level Forum on Intelligent Electric Vehicle Development (2026) held from April 11 to 12 at the Beijing National Convention Center Phase II, GEELY AUTO Chairman Li Shufu emphasized the company’s commitment to advancing methanol-powered vehicles as a key pathway for green transportation.

Li Shufu noted that GEELY, alongside other domestic automakers, is actively responding to national green energy initiatives by making extensive use of clean energy sources such as wind, solar, hydrogen, and ammonia. He pointed out that methanol electric vehicles—whether passenger or commercial models—are relatively lightweight, offer superior carbon reduction benefits, deliver better lifecycle economics, and are more user-friendly and practical. These advantages position methanol vehicles as a promising technical route for green energy adoption in heavy-duty transport.

From a technical standpoint, Li Shufu highlighted that methanol’s energy density is more than ten times that of lithium-ion batteries. Vehicles with equivalent load capacity powered by lithium-ion batteries tend to weigh twice as much as methanol electric vehicles. He explained that heavier vehicles inherently consume more energy. While lithium-ion battery electric vehicles have gained widespread adoption and popularity in China, their significant weight compared to methanol alternatives points to energy efficiency challenges. This, he suggested, leaves considerable potential for further research and development of methanol electric vehicles.

Li Shufu concluded by reaffirming GEELY’s intention to strengthen and expand the methanol vehicle industry, aiming to elevate it to a new level of development.
