Bitcoin (BTC) is holding firm above the $80,000 support level, riding a wave of exchange-traded fund inflows even as legislative setbacks and Federal Reserve rate hikes create a complex macro backdrop. The digital asset has shown remarkable resilience despite the odds stacked against it.
Market data from Polymarket shows the probability of the proposed crypto clarity bill passing has dropped sharply, yet investor sentiment remains unshaken. Instead of panic, the market has demonstrated notable price stability, with institutional interest clearly signaling sustained conviction in the asset class.
Where to begin
BTC is currently trading at $80,582, down $1,400 from the weekend peak of $82,000. According to tracking data, Friday saw a massive $433 million in net ETF inflows, more than tripling Thursday's $133 million figure. While the month-to-date net inflow of $313 million represents a slowdown compared to last month's $3.52 billion, cumulative net inflows have now reached $55.1 billion against total net assets of $102.5 billion.
Leading the charge is BlackRock Inc (NYSE: BLK)'s iShares Bitcoin Trust IBIT (NYSE: IBIT) with $63 billion in assets, followed by Fidelity's Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund FBTC (NYSE: FBTC) at $14.3 billion.
Macro headwinds meet improving sentiment
The Federal Reserve's 25-basis-point rate hike to the 3.75%-4% range has created headwinds, compounded by the US-Iran crisis driving energy costs higher. Diesel prices have hit a record $6.50 per gallon with potential to reach $7, while gasoline has climbed to $4.47. These inflationary pressures typically spell trouble for risk assets.
However, the Crypto Fear & Greed Index has climbed to 71, firmly in "greed" territory, signaling improving market psychology that is offsetting macro concerns. This divergence between external pressures and internal sentiment suggests traders are looking beyond near-term obstacles.
Technical picture points to breakout potential
BTC is exhibiting a textbook cup-and-handle formation, currently in the handle consolidation phase, alongside a bullish flag pattern defined by vertical lines and a descending channel. The price has established solid footing above the 100-day exponential moving average.
A decisive break above the May peak of $82,135 would open the path toward the psychological $85,000 level, confirming the continuation of the broader uptrend. Market participants are closely watching this key resistance zone as the next catalyst for directional movement.
