Concentrated forced deleveraging in semiconductor and memory stocks caused TMT hedge funds to suffer their worst single-month loss on record in July, and the ripple effects of this shock could be far more profound than the numbers alone suggest.
According to trading desk sources, a JPMorgan report on August 5th titled "Flows & Liquidity" cited preliminary data from Pivotal Path, showing that TMT equity sector hedge funds lost 10.2% in a single month, while multi-strategy funds lost 2.3%.
The core of this loss was forced liquidation concentrated in semiconductor and memory stocks.
Record loss: forced liquidation behind the numbers
The 10.2% figure does not tell the whole story. JPMorgan noted that the above loss data excludes the Situational Awareness fund, which reportedly saw its assets under management plummet from $45 billion to $10 billion. Incorporating this fund would make the actual losses for TMT funds in July even more staggering.
The report cited historical data from Pivotal Path, indicating that if the final data is confirmed by more funds, July would mark the largest single-month loss ever for TMT equity sector hedge funds.
Multi-strategy funds were also not spared. JPMorgan pointed out that their 2.3% monthly loss ranks fourth in history, with larger single-month losses requiring a look back to the COVID-19 crisis in March 2020, the Lehman crisis in 2008, or the bursting of the internet bubble in 2000.
JPMorgan directly raised a series of risk management questions in the report: "Was concentration risk underestimated? Were volatility/correlation risks in options positions mismanaged? Did stop-loss/risk budget discipline fail or get overridden? Were financing/margin/liquidity dynamics insufficiently stress-tested?"
Structural impact: hedge fund capacity to hold positions may be long-term constrained
The impact of the single loss goes beyond this. JPMorgan analyzed that the July blow will structurally compress the ability of TMT sector funds and multi-strategy funds to hold tech positions through multiple mechanisms.
First, a decline in AUM directly leads to a mechanical contraction of risk budgets. Second, funds themselves may proactively tighten risk management frameworks, increasing concentration limits. Third, prime brokers may reduce the balance sheet space allocated to these strategies.
The triple pressure superposition means that the capacity of these two types of funds to take on tech stock positions will systematically decline in the future.
A new concern for AI trade: retail investors as the last buyers?
This structural change leads to the most noteworthy judgment in the JPMorgan report. The report explicitly states: "If this judgment holds, with hedge funds' capacity to hold tech positions structurally declining, then tech trading will increasingly rely on retail investors in the longer term, making it more susceptible to volatility shocks from leveraged ETFs, retail option buying, and retail margin accounts."
The logic chain is clear: institutional capital retreats → the marginal pricing power of tech stocks (especially AI-related targets) shifts to retail investors → market volatility rises structurally. Retail capital is characterized by emotion-driven behavior, concentrated leverage, and weak stop-loss discipline. Once it becomes the main support force for AI trading, the rise and fall of the tech sector will depend more on the ebb and flow of retail sentiment than on fundamental changes.
