The labor force participation rate came in at 61.8%, compared with 61.6% a month earlier.
Average hourly earnings rose 0.1% from the previous month, against an estimate of a 0.3% gain and a 0.3% increase a month earlier.
Private-sector nonfarm payrolls increased by 46,000, following a gain of 89,000 a month earlier; the estimate was for an increase of 81,000, with forecasts from 47 surveyed economists ranging between 40,000 and 165,000.
Manufacturing payrolls rose by 9,000, after a 15,000 gain a month earlier; the estimate was for an increase of 10,000, with forecasts from 16 surveyed economists ranging from unchanged to a rise of 25,000.
The unemployment rate stood at 4.2%, compared with 4.1% a month earlier; the estimate was 4.1%, with forecasts from 78 surveyed economists ranging between 4% and 4.3%.
The underemployment rate was 7.6%, compared with 7.7% a month earlier.
