Apple and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Showcase 2nm Process Technology as iPhone 16 Prices Continue to Decline

On September 22, according to foreign media reports, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, which has been mass-producing 3nm process technology for over two years, is advancing the mass production of more advanced 2nm process technology. In recent quarterly earnings analyst conference calls, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Chairman and CEO C.C. Wei has consistently stated that the company is proceeding on schedule to begin mass production in the second half of this year.

Notably, due to leaks regarding the iPhone 17, iPhone 16 prices have continued to decline, with the device reaching new price lows since its launch.

Similar to previously mass-produced 7nm, 5nm, and 3nm process technologies, Apple will remain a major initial customer for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing's planned 2nm process technology mass production this year, with reports suggesting the company will secure nearly half of the production capacity.

Regarding chips that Apple will manufacture using Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing's 2nm process technology, foreign media reports indicate these include the A20 series chips for the iPhone 18 series, M6 series chips for Macs starting next year, and R2 chips for the next-generation Vision Pro.

However, based on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing's process technologies previously used in Apple chips, the A20 series, M6 series, and R2 will likely represent only the first batch of chips using Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing's 2nm process technology. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing will subsequently upgrade the 2nm process technology, launching multiple generations including N2P. Therefore, Apple will continue to have multiple chips manufactured using Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing's 2nm process technology until more advanced manufacturing processes become available for mass production.
