As of August 17, data from State Grid Chongqing Electric Power Company reveals that the total installed capacity for wind and photovoltaic power generation in Chongqing has surpassed the 10-gigawatt threshold, reaching 10.39 gigawatts. This marks a growth of over 17% compared to the end of 2025, with this renewable energy now accounting for more than 23% of the region's total power mix, signaling a rapid acceleration in the transition toward a cleaner and lower-carbon energy structure.

Xiao Qiang, director of the New Power System Construction Center at the State Grid Chongqing Economic Research Institute, noted that unlike thermal and hydro power, wind and solar energy generation are characterized by intermittency and significant fluctuations. The large-scale and high-proportion integration of these sources into the grid necessitates support from regulating resources, such as energy storage systems.

To address this, State Grid Chongqing Electric Power is actively promoting the construction of pumped-storage hydroelectric stations and grid-side energy storage facilities. These initiatives are crucial for enhancing the grid's regulation capabilities, thereby ensuring efficient consumption and integration of new energy sources like wind and solar power.

Current statistics show that Chongqing has completed one pumped-storage power station with an installed capacity of 1.2 gigawatts. Additionally, 12 grid-side energy storage projects have been constructed and put into operation, adding a new regulation capacity of 1.4 gigawatts. Furthermore, distributed photovoltaic power generation is experiencing rapid growth in the city; as of the end of July, its installed capacity reached 5.25 gigawatts, accounting for more than half of the total installed capacity from both wind and solar sources.
