McKinsey Forecasts 3.5x Growth in AI Data Center Demand Over Next Five Years, Creating $6 Trillion Opportunity for NVIDIA

A new McKinsey analysis projects that global demand for AI-dedicated data center capacity will grow 3.5 times by 2030, potentially creating a multi-trillion dollar market opportunity for chip giant NVIDIA.

The report predicts that power demand for AI workloads will surge from 44 gigawatts (GW) in 2025 to 156 GW by the end of the decade.

McKinsey's report, titled "Scaling bigger, faster, cheaper data centers with smarter design," provides the foundation for these optimistic projections.

According to the analysis, total data center capacity demand, including non-AI workloads, will expand from 82 GW in 2025 to 219 GW in 2030. Overall, McKinsey expects capital expenditures on data center infrastructure, excluding IT hardware itself, to exceed $1.7 trillion by 2030.

However, focusing specifically on AI workloads, capacity is projected to expand from 44 GW in 2025 to 156 GW in 2030.

This expansion is primarily driven by AI proliferation, with artificial intelligence expected to account for 70% of total data center capacity by 2030.

**Data Center Expansion Creates $6.2 Trillion Opportunity for NVIDIA**

This explosive growth was central to comments made by NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang in a March interview. He stated: "Each gigawatt [of data center capacity] is worth about $40 billion, and for NVIDIA, it's $50 billion."

According to calculations published on social media by "The AI Investor" in a post titled "Jensen's Math," this translates to a staggering $6.2 trillion market opportunity for NVIDIA.

This figure is derived by multiplying the projected 156 GW capacity for 2030 by Huang's stated $40 billion figure.

McKinsey's report notes that even if this estimate proves to be double the actual figure, the opportunity would still represent an eye-popping $3.1 trillion.
