According to three sources familiar with intelligence reports, President Trump's assertion that Iran will soon possess missiles capable of striking the United States is not supported by U.S. intelligence assessments and appears exaggerated. This has cast doubt on part of the rationale Trump has presented for a potential military strike against Iran. During his State of the Union address to Congress on Tuesday, Trump began outlining the case for possible U.S. action against Iran, stating that Tehran is "developing missiles that could soon reach U.S. territory." However, two sources noted that an unclassified 2025 assessment by the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) maintains its original conclusion: Iran is unlikely to develop a "militarily viable intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM)" based on existing satellite launch vehicle (SLV) technology until around 2035.
